Golf still booming here at Jersey Shore

Tee times scarce business brisk and lots of good weather coming here at the shore. Alas pricing going up quickly and private clubs filling up their memberships , crazy stuff!

From checking around, it is booming broadly.  Also, pricing is following supply and demand.  Is there a component in the CPI for green fees?

Also, prices of houses in my modest development have gone up nearly 25% since the beginning of Covid with no sign of it slowing down.  Waiting for gravity to have its effect.

The lasting impact of Covid will be the fact that many of us can work from anywhere.

That will cause seismic disruption to our economy, ultimately for the betterment of all of us.

Mayday we will surely play with a group soon at Twisted.  As soon as it gets firm and fast we start the invitations.

I just bought new clubs (woo woo)  and have been practicing

While golf is more popular in NJ as a result of the pandemic, there's some evidence it may be reverting to pre-pandemic norms.  I made an inquiry last week at a private club considered to be located at the Jersey shore.  I was told by the membership director I would probably get in within a year -- previous rumors were a 2-3 year wait.  The membership director said many who applied last year did so based on their situation in the middle of the pandemic.  With many, situations are changing with most not sure of what they'll be doing the rest of this year or next year.  I guess it's fair to say the pandemic may or may not be over.

The South Jersey shore in particular might have a glut of golfers looking for places to play as result of the exodus of over 100 members from Hidden Creek since being acquired by the Domie Network (I am one of them).  This might be the reason there are persistent rumors that Atlantic City will be fully private next year.

Does anyone think what Archie describes with regard to golf's popularity will be the case in 2 years?  This is something discussed regularly in my playing group -- most of my playing friends think this trend will pass.

I think some of the pre-pandemic "concerns" about the cost and, more importantly, the time needed to play golf will supersede the current situation.

The danger to golf is the coming down from the sugar-high of political spending which appears to be inevitable.  Inflated real estate and stock values give a false sense of wealth and well-being.  When these reverse, with inflation and higher taxes cutting into real disposable income, the health of the golf economy will be heavily impacted.  The segment of the population targeted for punishment has a large intersect with that of golf.  Clubs located in states with high taxes and government spending might be thinking of creating a rainy day fund as opposed to doing $10-$20 Million renovations.  The diaspora appears to be continuing, not that places like Shinny or Pine Valley will be affected.  Of course, D.C. is immune from all this.

Lou,

8:10 am tee time today, played in 4:15 hours, and paid $37.08 to walk on the North Fork of Long Island:

I played with a 78 year old Marine today who is recovering from shoulder surgery. He kicked my ass!!

Indian Island! I prefer it to Islands End but must admit I haven't played either in years.  That particular par 3 I remember fondly.  It can get quite windy there.

I guess I need to play there soon then?
