BUDA CUP XIX - 2021. CAVENDISH AND REDDISH VALE
« on: September 22, 2020, 03:36:41 AM »
At Kington last week conversation turned to next year's BUDA. Hopefully things will have returned to something like normal by then - I guess we have to plan on that assumption.

My suggestion of a BUDA based around Cavendish and the town of Buxton seemed to be well received, and if a concencus developed for that I would be delighted to organise it, with the help of Jayne who is now a committed BUDA babe.

36 holes on a Saturday is always going to be a problem at members' clubs in this area - Saturday is sacred as Competition Day and tees are always rammed until around 2pm. My thoughts then, are for 18 holes at Cavendish on a Saturday afternoon, 36 holes on Sunday at another local course of architectural interest, culminating in 36 holes at Cavendish on the Monday.

Opportunities for pre and post BUDA golf abound, with the Southport area being less than two hours away, heathland classics such as Delamere Forest and Hollinwell an hour or so distant, and a myriad of other interesting courses within easy reach.

Buxton is a lovely town in which to spend a few days, with attractions ranging from the most genteel imaginable to hardcore debauchery. Among the club's members are the proprietors of an excellent local hotel, various B&Bs and some lovely self catering holiday apartments in the centre of town. I can look into special deals.

Manchester Airport is an easy 45 minute journey through breathtaking scenery.

I'm sure there will be other suggestions but there's my pitch.

I'd be interested in peoples' thoughts.

Very fine! Cavendish is a proper Buda venue. I am in if dates work.

Duncan,

I was sorry to miss Buda this year and hope we can have something like a return to normal for next year?

As will no doubt have been discussed, Buda is very much of a "build it and they will come" nature, so if you are keen to organise and no one offers an alternative, its fine by me, especially at Cavendish! As I live relatively close to Cavendish I'd be more than happy to help you with organising this if that helps?

A couple of points, firstly while a weekend does tend to make things easier it can be a pain getting decent tee times and so a mid week or part weekend Buda isnt out of the question. Secondly I just did a quick exercise regarding other decent courses in the area which people may want to play either pre or post Buda, or even becoming the second course at Buda (more caveats than I can list as to whether some of these are suitable or not at this time) and this came out as follows:
- Beau Desert, Delamere Forest, Lindrick and Hollinwell, all about 40 miles or 1 hr 15 mins drive.
- Reddish Vale and JCB, both about 20something miles and 50 mins drive, according to Google Maps
Just to give an idea of possible driving between venues...

Also a personal request that we avoid the weekend of Sat 25 to Tue 28 Sept as I've another golf event then.

Cheers,

James

2023 Highlights: Hollinwell, Brora, Parkstone, Cavendish, Hallamshire, Sandmoor, Moortown, Elie, Crail, St Andrews (Himalayas & Eden), Chantilly, M, Hardelot Les Pins, Alwoodley

I’d be up for an early September BUDA in Cavendish. A few courses around there that I haven’t seen and really wish to.

Plus Buxton would be a nice base I guess?

Please sign me up for the hardcore debauchery. Might play some golf too.

This seems to be gaining momentum.

Cavendish currently have a completely free schedule on Sunday 5th September 2021. Members tend not to play on Sundays so booking 36 holes will not be a problem. This would not be the case at other clubs which get a lot of Sunday morning member play.

At that time in early September daylight extends until 8pm. Three weeks later sunset is almost an hour earlier. As one of the great joys of Cavendish is sitting on the west facing terrace overlooking the 18th green nursing a drink as the sun sets behind the hills I would suggest that this would be the perfect weekend.

Any objections to me filling in the schedule around this date?

Jack Weiner and I already have credits to play Birkdale and both Formby courses so that sounds great.

I'd like to make a return to BUDA, but Sept 6 doesn't work for me.  It'd have to be either Aug 29th or Sept 19th weekends to work for me.

Do we really feel like Buda happened at Kington/Welshpool?

I can understand some desire to go to a new place in 2021, but how many of us signed up for Kington actually made it there? If we don't do Buda at Kington next year, fine, but it should be on the radar sooner rather than later IMO.

This post is no knock on Cavenish - it's a great choice. But Kington is special, and I'm all for more of us seeing it.

John,

I too thought that a proper BUDA at Kington next year was the obvious way forward. However, Sean has made it clear that he is not interested in repeating the task of organising it. That must be respected.

You will have noticed how quick Sean was in endorsing the idea of a Cavendish BUDA!

I would hope that a return to Kington can happen sooner rather than later.

Sounds good to me.

Will leave it to others to say if Labor(sp?) Day 9/6/21 (so wrong 😈) is a problem.

Two good reasons for basing it over a weekend.

Will allow those suffering from a curse called work to attend (and it was great to see some young blood this year)

For those touring from overseas its always hardest to get weekend tee times. Makes it easy to plan a trip if BUDA sorts that. I feel we should make it easier for those who travel the furthest to play.

One other date to consider avoiding. Is last weekend in September. Ryder Cup.

Good luck happy to help if I can.

Somebody else can organize Kington for Buda. I am happy to go there as well.

Count me in for this Buda, where ever it is played. My plan is to spend the summer in North Berwick from June through September, so I’ll be up for anything! Cavendish & Reddish Vale seems a great combo.

And, yes Spangles, it is Labor Day... without the “u”.  ;D

To the extent that the "young blood" shared some of my genes, then work wasn't an issue this year, except for the one who didn't make it.  But for the moment, count me and Finlay and Gregor in.  I'm sure they'd be up for rather more debauchery than Kington had to offer....
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I missed last year with a bad neck and this year, hopeful for 2021.  With the development of a vaccine it look more likely that travel across will once again be possible. Hoping for an International BUDA.

I would support Cavendish as a venue and plan to attend. Only half an hour from Chatsworth which is one of the most beautiful “houses” you will ever see. I like the idea of heading to a county most travellers (golfers or not) will never reach - yet still pretty accessible.

I can't do 11/12th or 18th/19th otherwise I'd definitely love to do a Cavendish BUDA. Good luck organising.
