My club, Berkshire Hills in Pittsfield, MA sits at around 1,000 ft. above sea level.  My question to the group is do you know of any Tilly work that is at a higher elevation than that?  I appreciate the feedback.

Rochester G & CC, Minnesota, is a bit over 1000 feet.  I'm away from the office so I don't have the topo map handy, but the town sits right at 1000 feet, and the golf course is uphill from the center of town.  I'd guess the higher parts are a bit above 1100 feet.

Thanks for the info.  Reason I ask is that my course has beautiful 360 degree mountain views and I'm doing extensive tree removal to highlight these views in addition to improving play/sight lines and agronomy.  A small but vocal group of members are questioning the tree removal and I was going to write up a little piece highlighting the fact that not too many other Tillinghast' are lucky enough to have the mountain surrounds and topography we do.

Norfolk CC in Norfolk Ct sits at 1,250' to 1,300'.

Pontoosuc must be about the same elevation as BHCC.

I played there when I was a kid, when I was first getting really into golf.  I recall it being a beautiful setting, but never did any research on it, as it was a long time ago.

The high point at Johnson City Country Club (Johnson City, TN) is around 1,680 ft above sea level and Roanoke Country Club (Roanoke, VA), where he did some work, is around 1,120.

The Tillinghast Society has it listed as a reconstruction.  I don't know what he did, but there are some vg holes on the course.

Guys, thanks for the help. Seems like our elevation doesn't make us all that unique but the 360 mountain surround while being in the middle of a city probably does.  Pontoosuc is in pretty rough condition at the moment, things don't change I'm not sure how long it'll be around.

Galen Hall CC starts at 1100 and descends, and subsequently ascends to and from 650 feet. The highest part of the golf course was an Alex Findlay nine to which Tillinghast added another 9. I'm sure some of the Scranton area Tillinghast courses (Valley, Wyoming Valley, Irem Temple, and Fox Hill) are around this elevation too.

Jim - My recollection is that Pontoosic is Stiles and Van Kleek with a Tillinghast visit in the 30s and though the elevation is similar its lake side as opposed to The Hills aptly named, as you are well aware for its Hill top outward and homeward holes as with much of the course.

I went to boarding school in Sheffield, MA many years ago. I finally had the chance to play Berkshire Hills for the first time two summers ago. I really enjoyed the course! I was happy to play Tilly's only design in Massachusetts on my quest to play as many of his courses as I can.

Bob Decker was kind enough to host me at Berkshire Hills yesterday. It’s a great piece of land with some A1 vistas due to continued tree clearing by Bob and his crew. The internal looks are enhanced by long views of the Berkshires which are part of the Appalachian range. It has an interesting routing with five par threes, five par fives and eight par four holes. The turf is in wonderful condition and with a bunch of greens at grade there are a variety of ways to get into the hole. Though revered by its members and the local golf scene it’s a course hiding in plain sight. Anybody that gets a chance to see A.W. Tillinghast’s only Massachusetts original design should jump at the chance. Finally it’s right there with Taconic as the class of the Berkshires.
