Favorite downhill 18th holes
« on: July 30, 2020, 03:32:18 PM »
Most 18th holes seem to travel uphill because the clubhouse tends to occupy the highest ground on the site. There are some great downhill finishers though. I am thinking of 18 at Philly Cricket, Stonewall is downhill, and so is the little beauty Cavendish. What are some of your favorites?

I can only think of two off the top of my head. Congressional Blue is one of best holes on the course. Kapalua Plantation is overrated although I am sure that I am in minority.

Jeff and mine crossed as we posted. I did think of one more: Primland which is a thrill ride.

Sean's favorite, Kington - downhill and sidehill.

Also Pitlochry.

Besides Stonewall, my best one might have been at the long-gone Bay of Dreams.

One more sort of downhill: Golspie which is a fitting ending to the course.

Kington!
Welshpool and Carne Kilmore as honourable mentions although they both rise up towards the green (green still significantly lower than the tee though).

Eastward Ho! - sharply downhill tee shot but green sits up above the fairway.

I had forgotten about Congressional. I keep think of it as 17. But alas they reversed the old 18 and made it ten. Count me as a fan of Kapalua's finisher. I had forgotten about White Bear and Wade Hampton.
Four Streams is flatish and downhill third shot.

I have yet to get to Kington. Next trip.

I saw the thread title and assumed it was a joke.  Everyone knows the answer is Kington, don't they?  If they don't, why haven't they been paying attention?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Southerndown might be one of the only courses where the clubhouse is situated on the lowest point of the course.

18 at Rock Creek is uphill - even from the back tee!  10-17 are downhill though 😉

Par 5 18 at Gamble Sands. Only a favorite because even my wife can get on in two by roping a worm jerker down the left side. It’s like hitting a drive on a airport runway....if that runway happened to be downhill.  ;D
