Here is a link for Sean's tour of Kington for those of us who haven't yet played the course. Eighteen looks like fun at 280 yards with fascinating green complex.

Park Club, Williamsville, New York.

I stumbled onto another one this week, but I'm sworn to secrecy on the the course. It is a nine-hole affair that everyone on this site would love. All shall be revealed next week.

Most 18th holes seem to travel uphill because the clubhouse tends to occupy the highest ground on the site. There are some great downhill finishers though. I am thinking of 18 at Philly Cricket, Stonewall is downhill, and so is the little beauty Cavendish. What are some of your favorites?

Cavendish has a wonderful 18th hole. Despite a drive from an elevated tee I'm not sure it could be described as downhill, though.

Porthcawl, surely. And (like Southerndown) the RPGC clubhouse is at the lowest point of the links. Golf Quarterly recently cited the 18th green at Porthcawl as the best final green in the UK (article admittedly written by a distinguished Porthcawl member...) and I can't think of a better one (unless you count the utterly unique context of TOC). Doubtless many on GCA will disagree, warmly!

I didn't think of Kingsley's 18th as being downhill, but just played out there and realized that it is.  Even though it goes down and up, it is still a 20 foot net drop from tee to green.

Love Royal Porthcawl and Alwoodley

Worplesdon's is weird for mine. For an otherwise good course - downhill to the carpark?

Worpy's finisher is good, but it's an unfortunate setting. Much like Addington. Although I never thought of Worpy 18 as downhill.

Try Hawick's Par 3 18th, 80 feet downhill to a double green.

It's interesting - nothing jumps out from the top echelon of courses re: anything significantly downhill.

I haven't played there but am aware Hamilton Island is severly downhill. Some that I know of are Robina Woods (downhill P5)  and say Moonah Links (P5).

There are a few like St. Andrews Beach and Ellerston that have elevated tee shots but then the geography is pretty slight after that.

Some that stand out in my memory:

- TimberStone - does the fairway double as a ski run in winter?
- Shuttle Meadow - the downhill nature of the hole is incidental, because it's really memorable for one of the most audacious greens I've ever seen
- Top of the Rock - it's the 9th hole on a 9-hole course; does that count?
- Treyburn - solid long if typical Fazio par 4

The 9th hole at this place is marvelous: http://www.atticas10thhole.com/

It is the hidden jewel to which I alluded, earlier in this thread.

Treyburn 18 is a very visually attractive hole. If my memory from one play serves, also difficult par because of the water in front of the green. Not unfair, but does force a choice even with a good drive. I enjoyed the whole course.

18 at Treyburn is one of Fazio's better holes. It is visually intimidating and requires an accurate second shot. Short of off-line and you are wet. Treyburn flies under the radar. It is really good.

Asheville NC Muni, Ross, has a 230 yd finisher.  Must be 40' or more drop.
Wouldn't call it a favorite though.

Tim-Shuttle Meadow 18 has grown on me over the years. For the hole to truly shine you have to get the deep pin.

I played Hollinwell again this week and the 18th is as good - and tough - a downhill final hole as I remember it.  It’s a fantastic finish to a wonderful course.

The 18th at my home club, Huddersfield (aka Fixby) isn’t in the same class - in fact it’s an odd hole in some ways, which some think unfair - but I realised yesterday that it has a very unusual feature.  Hitting a really disappointing tee shot leaves you with probably my favourite shot on the course.

The hole is a 487-yard par 5 with a steeply uphill drive to a marker post about 230 yards away.  At that point, the hole drops very sharply downhill.  Roll just over the crest on the right line and you can easily get a further 100+ yards of run.  Land on the downslope and you will have no more than a wedge left.

That really disappointing tee shot is one which (as for me yesterday) you’re sure has made it over the hill but you find sitting right on the crest - a yard more roll and you’re hitting no more than a 6-iron with a great chance to finish with a birdie.  Instead you have 250 yards left to a green sitting 70-80 feet below you.  You genuinely could putt it 150 yards but, for me, it’s a 3-wood and hitting a good one and watching it hang in the air, not sure whether the distance is right or not until it lands, is a great feeling.

Yesterday?  Topped it and left myself about where a well-struck putt would have finished up!

The 18th at Denison Golf Club (FKA Granville GC) drops about 130 feet from tee to green. The view from the tee is somewhat breathtaking with the town of Granville and Denison University in the near distance….especially when the leaves are changing in the fall. The original 18th played downhill as well and looks like it was a great hole before they reconfigured the golf course and built the clubhouse on the original 18th fairway. It must have been a great finish back in the day.

The downhill 18th at the Longue Vue Club is a great finish to the Robert White designed course with the wonderful English country estate styled clubhouse in the background.

Victoria Melbourne probably doesn’t qualify overall, but the approach shot being downhill and the green running away made for a shot I felt always had to be well thought out
