Mike,

I played the North recently with two people that had never played it but had played the Old. They were having a lot of fun on the North and one of them did prefer it.

Once we made the turn and they saw the great use of bunkers to connected 11, 12 and 17 and the great work on 14, they got even more enthusiastic.  It is so much fun!

I played all 36 holes last week. I had never been on the property before. I really enjoyed the day. My friend and I both decided that if we were members, we would split our rounds 50/50 between the North and Old. I play a lot of 9 hole rounds and would imagine I would choose the Old back nine more than any other nine (especially in the evening). I thought the back nine on the Old course was fantastic. However, I think the North course contains a stronger 18 holes than the Old course does. I understand TD inherited the routing but I didn't love holes 4-8 on Old course (they aren't bad holes, they just didn't seem to complement the rest of the Old).

On the other hand, all 18 holes on the North course "make sense" and make for a fun, challenging, engaging round.

Good Lord, I must go 7 Udder and 3 Old.

But I’m old.  As others will test(ament)ify, too.  ;-)

Is it because you can ride or do you prefer the udder? I'm 74 so you're likely not old than I am, I hope.

For some reason there is a name that sticks in my head, Rand Middleton , I believe .  He was more or less an official/unofficial project manager on the job. Sure Tom Doak or Mayday will remember.

Quite a character if memory serves me

Archie:

Yes, RM was the project manager.  He had no background as such (other than his golf background) but he was enough of a ***** that he could keep everyone in line, which is the #1 qualification!

He went off the rails a few months after the Old course was finished and no one ever spoke of him again, which is wild considering how many of the original players are still around.

I remember that whenever I would leave town for a couple of days, he eould try to create a mini crisis to out pressure on Gil Hanse to make a decision without me!

Those are actually some of my favorite holes on the Old course, but, they do not make the walk easier.

Tom- what makes those holes some of your favorite? I thought the last handful of holes were so good, especially with a match on the line.

Is stonewall open for outside play or members of another club?

They are usually open to a call from your head professional.

#4, I am just amazed we got a decent hole in there!
#5 is a lovely green, if you aim away from the water it's a much harder up and down
#6 is my favorite of them, the narrow stream is really a feature of play.  Many players attempt the carry but aim left to shorten it, only to find out that the green tilts away from that line.  You're much better being out to the end of the short-right fairway, but it's not easy to get there, either.

To amplify Tom's comments I'll add some ground level visuals for that strong stretch of holes (4-6) at the Old course at Stonewall (these pics from April of this year):

During my recent non-golfing visit to see my daughter for the first time since September '19 due to the Pandemic and her new house in Elverson in northern Chester County, I decided to visit Stonewall and French Creek, both nearby.  All 3 courses were in terrific shape and membership is thriving. We are considering a summer rental nearby for next year. Stonewall has a 10 year waiting list for a non-resident, non-equity membership with 12 rounds/year and an equity, non-resident membership requiring payment of regular green fees and a buy in share. French Creek(now owned by Club Corp)  has a single non-resident membership with an initiation fee and yearly dues plus green fees for 35 rounds/year and a family non-resident membership with an initiation fee and yearly dues plus green fees for 70 rounds/year. We will consider this seriously; but there are nearby publics that  will probably come into play. Other privates in the area are Bellwood, LedgeRock and even Moselem Springs. I'll return again in September to play some golf.  The summer  heat in AZ is relentless.

@Steve_Shaffer - French Creek is not owned by ClubCorp.   I know the owners (wife & husband who like me have been members forever).

Back to Stonewall - one of my favorite spots is the relatively new cottages on the Udder course.   Pure class!

Ooops... French Creek is an " alliance club" within the Club Corp network and is not owned or managed by Club Corp.

Both Stonewall and French Creek are about 8 miles from my daughter's house.
