I recall reading a comment from Nick Price during the 1st U.S. Open at Bethpage. As he was walking on one of the paths accompanied by a USGA official, on a par 4 that he had difficulty reaching the fairway, he said "these fairways sure aren't very wide."

It was the 10th hole... some of the last changes/amendments to Bethpage before its 2002 championship unveiling were new back tees put on 10 and 12....I believe the addition on #10 made the fairway a 245+/- carry to reach the fairway.   It may have been Price himself who made the additional remark, "I'm going to have to aim for that path"
"The tee shot must first be hit straight and long between a vast bunker on the left which whispers 'slice' in the player's ear, and a wilderness on the right which induces a hurried hook." -
