difficult courses you could play everyday
« on: July 07, 2020, 07:58:00 PM »
There are some difficult courses that I need to see only once in a while. I couldn't play Carnoustie everyday. I am not that much of a masochist. I'm not sure I could play Pine Valley everyday either. I belong(ed) to two difficult courses that I could play everyday: Musgrove Mill nd Ballyhack. Both are difficult but both are fun and allow all kinds of shots. They also elevate your game, except last week when I was dreadful.

I love difficult tracks because they allow my shortgame to shine since I have to use it so much!

That said, tough courses, for me, are only fun if I get to play them in excellent condition. If they are in excellent condition, then It's all on you if you make double or worse. There's just nothing worse than playing a super tough track in crappy greenside conditions. Miss a green, settle in a bare hole, zero chance to get it close. Double-bogey. No fun.

I could play Spyglass every day, for sure.

I could play La Purisima every day, if it was in really good shape -- especially the surrounds, which never are anymore.

Interesting. I played La Purisima about four years ago and thought it was excellent. The condition was ok. Not sure I could play Spyglass everyday though. it's too long.

It would depend upon whose definition of "difficult" and Well "conditioned"
When perfect conditioning becomes a condition of playing a "difficult" course, I guess I'm just going to opt for something else... that's neither well "conditioned or "difficult"

I realize that's vague, but as long as the ball rolls reasonably true on the greens at almost any speed (5-14), I'm in, and I tire of egotistical, boring, one dimensional difficult golf courses where looking for a ball becomes common.Low score wins, I don't care how "challenging" a course is in a match-we're both playing the smae hole.
Today my opponent's partner flew the first green by 20 yards, and they suggested we play winter rules, because of "fliers"
I said no, we're playing golf.
On the second hole the same opponent flew the green by 20 yards, off a tee.....

Oakland Hills South...easily.  Especially after Hanse and team do their magic.  It's going to be good.

When will the work be done? Oaklands Hills renovated is a tough course I would love to see. A course with such great greens deserves some TLC.

Muirfield
Ganton
Carnoustie

I'd be quite happy to play every day at any of those.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I have not played Muirfield however I have played the other two multiple times.

Isn't it a coincidence that these three are probably the best bunkered courses in the UK??

Certainly Pine Valley as its a great walk and the more you play it the easier to accept the inevitable double bogey or chip out and make a good bogey. It's wide and if you can putt there is a great chance to shine relative to your playing partners. The greens are so pure that birdies are definitely out there.

Of course it's not easy to join as a member.

I might add River Course at Koehler, but I think it would be too difficult for me now.

Archie less than ten new members were admitted this year.

Par at PV after a wayward shot usually involves a miracle. The first time I played 15 I pulled my tee shot left into the trees and had to chip out sideways, a wood left me around 170yds from where I hit a 5 iron to within a foot for a get out of jail par.

Sean,
OH-S is closed until spring of next year.  The plans look really great.  I haven't seen much on social media regarding progress.

I am surprised that so many would pick Carnoustie. A regular diet of Carnoustie would either make you a good player or a former player.
When I go to Ireland I play The European Club every day for a week.
