Kelly Miller, President of PN/MP/SP, and Kyle Franz sat down to answer a few questions about the restoration so far and introduce Southern Pines Golf Club's Lost Hole.

Thanks for posting. I am driving through in late April, and while I will not be able to play SPGC, I would love to take a re-look.

I watched the Kelly Miller/Kyle Franz interview and went out today for a round.  Was paired up with three Mid Pines/Pine Needles members.  They spoke highly of the project and thought with the finished project, Southern Pines would be a peer for the other courses and some would prefer it to MP/PN.

The complexity of the terrain and the scope of bunkering and waste areas was apparent from the first green and second tee area. Large scale tree removal contributed to trees having a clean and almost manicured look.  There was great width which minimized any sense of claustrophobia.  I look forward to seeing completed greenside bunkering. My initial impression from the view near the first green and the second tee was confirmed over and over as I progressed through the round.

It was a worthwhile way to spend a day.  I made a mental note while on the course to invest what I saved on #2 and #4 green fees in a plane ticket back here in the fall.

Thanks for sharing this Jay!

Really neat that they'll have a sand green on the alt hole - something that will be a cool little touch.

I'm excited to see the finished product, and just another excuse to head back to Pinehurst sooner rather than later!

A timely post as five minutes ago I  booked 4 rounds including SP, MP and PN in April for the 25th Anniversary Other Senior Tour.

Can't wait to revisit Southern Pines.

Bogey—That’s a great trip. A membership to all three is something I’m pining for. ;)

A picture of #9 I saw today may have saved my interest in the game.  Can’t wait to see what they do to other holes!

If I do another trip to the Pinehurst area in the next year, the main reason will be to play Southern Pines after the renovation.

 8)  Very interesting, watching this all transpire at SP, a favorite play in the Sandhills... but not since '05!  Will be waiting for the reviews and seeing it for myself.

But they really need to address the Little 9 and bring it back into play too!

I saw construction of a short par three (aka Lost Hole)  which serves as the transition hole for the nine hole routing, so the nine hole option would be available.  The PN and MP players I was with communicated it would be used early in the day, when finishing holes had no players.

"The Lost Hole"

Back in the day there was a par 3 connecting the 4th green and the 15th tee. In the ensueing years longleaf pines took over. Now Kyle Franz has recaptured the site for a great connector hole to provide a wonderful 9 hole loop if traffic permits.

Sounds like the new owners plan to embrace the local area players and honor the memberships in place with Elks members.
