Here is the Press Release re the takeover:

SOUTHERN PINES GOLF CLUB

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT AND OWNERSHIPSOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Southern Pines Golf Club, a vintage Donald Ross- designed course dating to the early 1900s, is now under management of the company that owns and operates the Pine Needles and Mid Pines resorts nearby and will eventually be acquired by that same company.Kelly Miller, president of Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, announced the lease/purchase of the course from the Southern Pines Elks Club, the owner of the course since 1951. Miller said the Pine Needles / Mid Pines management company has taken over operation of the facility and is working toward a final sale when some infrastructure changes are made to the facility that have to do with environmental issues. The deal consummates 15 years of Miller having his eye on the Southern Pines Golf Club and thinking that its Ross lineage would make it an ideal fit for the umbrella containing Mid Pines, a 1921 Ross design, and Pine Needles, a 1928 Ross course. He had had discussions with the Elks management at various junctures without ever being able to consummate a transaction.“I’ve always thought it a wonderful golf course,” Miller says. “It’s one of the best routings in the area. It has great topography and a set of par-threes that are unmatched anywhere. The club has a lot of fascinating history and I think it’s perfect fit for us.”The Elks bought the course in 1951 from Mike Sherman, a Connecticut businessman who had owned it since the post-World War II days. Before then, it had been owned and operated by the town of Southern Pines.Golf has been played on this site since at least 1906, and newspaper records indicate an 18-hole Ross course was operational by 1923, with a new nine having opened in 1924. The third nine was later abandoned.“We’re delighted to see the golf course in the hands of the Miller family and their partners,” says Chris Deanes, Exalted Ruler of the Elks. “Quite honestly, the Elks have no business running a golf course. We’re a volunteer organization that focuses on charity and giving money away. Running golf courses is not what we do, and we’re happy the course is going to a family that does. Kelly and his partners truly appreciate the essence of the course and are committed to preserving it.”Adds John Andrews, Chairman of the Board for the Elks, “Kelly has a great vision for the course. They have a good plan to bring the course back to where it should be.”Miller says an 18-month course improvement plan is being developed that might include any of the following: design tweaks from architect Kyle Franz, who has supervised restorations at Mid Pines (2013) and Pine Needles (2018); resurfacing the greens; and rebuilding the bunkers and cart paths.

Southern Pines has the finest land of all three courses and with some TLC will make the Triumvirate the finest collections of Ross Courses under a single resort shingle. As an original member at Pine Needles I never grow tired of the 2 courses. The decision of which course to play will now become tougher. I am certain that the Powers That Be at GCA are pleased.

In a letter to the members it was indicated that there would be regrassing of the greens. There will be some work taking place over the next few months but the majority will come winter thru summer.

Mark,

Would be nice but impractical as traffic volume is too high in the warm seasons. Pinehurst/Southern Pines has gone well beyond a 2 season resort.

I live in Southern New England and can’t think of a better Winter destination as long as you have some flexibility to watch the weather. If I am there in January fifty degrees is perfect and anything north of seventy is too hot. ;)

Seems like keeping bent would be a nice complement to the summer season grasses at PN/MP.

Love playing bent at Dormie where they have just installed huge fans to cool the greens to keep them from burning out in summer heat and they have very few daily rounds not 100 plus. Come to Southern Pines this summer to enjoy the final year of bent.

Do locals fear the ownership will mean the loss of an affordable local course?

Is Southern Pines still playable/worth playing in March while it's being renovated? What's being done right now?

(I didn't see a more appropriate topic, but if there is one feel free to move this.)

Hey Erik:

Check out the facebook page for Southern Pines Golf Club. They have been posting photos/drone videos on the page with updates of the progress. Also, the website for SPGC has a page dedicated to the restoration, which includes a copy of the masterplan.....

Played Sothern Pines yesterday. There is construction and tree removal going on but it all provides an interesting insight into the restoration process. It has been quite wet here which has decreased the fun factor a bit but I still recommend it. Construction pricing is in effect, so it is a very good deal.

Jay,
I understand that they are shutting SP down this summer to work on the greens.  That timing, of course, suggests conversion to Bermuda.  Is that correct?

Plans call for shutting down the course for the summer during which the greens will be reshaped and regrassed with Bermuda for a late Summer reopening.  Below is the current overlay of the redo.

Jay -

I poked around last month when they were just getting started. Looked great then and the pictures of the recent work look even better. Should be another wonderful addition to an already super golf rich area. You guys sure are spoiled down there in Southern Pines!!!

Jay and others:
I am planning on playing SPCC in two weeks (for the sixth time in the last 14 months). Is the construction interrupting play, i.e., temp greens/closed holes? Thanks.
Bringing some first timers so they can get a sense of the "before" version.
(Also playing #2, #4, TR that week with friends. Golf, what a game).
