“Getting To 18” - Wow! A Whole Different Level
« on: June 23, 2020, 03:48:08 PM »
I was 10 years old when Sports Illustrated published “The 18 Best Golf Holes in America” and I somehow acquired my first golf architecture book. Then, for more than 50 years I steadily built my collection to almost 400 books. Not world class, of course, but pretty good for an amateur.

Well today something big happened. Tom Doak’s “Getting To 18” arrived. To say the least, I was immediately blown away. Golf Digest once described Cypress Point as the Sistine Chapel of Golf. Well deserved, I would say. “Getting To 18” deserves similar accolades. Just opening the book is like standing on the 16th tee at Cypress Point.

I am sure many people will thank Tom and all those who helped make the book happen. It truly is that special.

I tried to borrow it today via inter-library loan. One library, Michigan State, has it, but it's non-circulating in the reference collection. It's out of stock on Tom's site and doesn't seem to be available on the internet at any price, which means it is unlikely to be affordable to me when it becomes available there. Is there another angle to the target?

Only $2995 used on Amazon sold by Books In Demand. And can be delivered for free in March!

I’m such a massive dummy for not getting it when I could.

Do you have a kid you can pawn or know a reliable burglar? We can time a burglary for when a DG book collector is at Bandon or wherever.

Splendid tome and a wonderful historical record. Wish there were more akin to it either by the author or by others in the profession. Imagine a Colt or a Braid etc etc version written at the time by the men themselves!
As to G-T-18, insightful to read the section about a particular course and then to play the course. And then to re-read the section once again.
