Apologies if I missed a thread while searching, but I've just combed through archived posts on both Lakeside and Max Behr, and did not come across any photos or aerials of the course, particularly pre-flood.


Can anyone point me in the right direction for aerials? If not for Lakeside specifically, other LA golf courses before 1938?

I'm interested in Lakeside particularly because I had a good view from my office of Todd Eckenrode's renovation back when I worked on the other side of the LA river. Coming across MacKenzie's adulation for the course in The Spirit of St. Andrews caught me off guard based on what I'd seen, even after the significant improvements Mr. Eckenrode achieved. I now understand Behr favored short grass throughout, and MacKenzie noted the quality of the constructed undulation and restrained use of bunkering. The historic photos below demonstrate that Behr also featured large waste areas to create intrigue, more so even than Wilshire originally, although you wouldn't think that now when comparing the two courses.
 
Today, the amount of lush rough at Lakeside seems to clash with historic descriptions of the property, and its parkland aesthetic appears anomalous with the dry scrub dotting the surrounding mountains. I'd be curious to hear why Lakeside hasn't gone in the direction of what Kyle Phillips did at Wilshire, namely, removing turf and creating more naturally sandy scrapes at the perimeters of fairway. It seems more sustainable for Southern California water use and maintenance, in addition to returning the course closer to its original aesthetic. The southwest corner of the property could be quite enhanced were that direction taken.

Does anyone have an image of Behr's original routing of Lakeside? Couldn't find that in the "Compilation of Routing Maps, Plans and Architectural Drawings" thread either.
