We have had the dog discussion on this site many times in the past. Seems there is a cultural divide as they are generally allowed across the pond but not in the U.S. Personally I like dogs but don’t need or want them on the golf course. Golf needs fewer distractions.

This is an interesting article on why dogs in the UK may be more suited to the golf course than in the US.

I do my own travel plans.  I arrived in Edinburgh, rented a car, and drove to St. Andrews, on my way to Aberdeen, without a map or GPS as if I knew what I was doing, parked in the links parking lot, and walked to the first tee of the Old Course.  It was sublime, a perfect golf journey.  The first thing I saw was a golfer teeing off with his golf dog and pulling a trolley.  It was an affirmation of all I thought golf should be and, there in the home of golf, an epiphany I got it right.  I was hooked.  This was my game.  Forget all of the pretensions, this game was good for your soul and well being.  That golfer and his dog did it for me.

The members of Oak Hill have been selected and then purchased the privilege to do whatever they want with whomever they choose. That is different than being free to do so. Freedom is not something you buy then go behind a gate to practice.

No, that is precisely what freedom is.  The freedom to associate with kindred souls is guaranteed by our First Amendment, as is the right to exclude others from that association, subject to certain limitations not relevant to caddies or push carts (but quite relevant to other aspects of historic country club life in America).  If you don't like the rules, don't join the club.  I think Oak Hill's rule is just right.  But if you think push carts are gauche, and caddies are the hallmark of civilized golf, there are plenty of US clubs for you too.

No way! Trolleys are a fixture of GB&I golf never to go away... and they are growing in popularity in the US, especially the powered ones. The powered trollies are much less expensive in the UK, for some reason (supply & demand, I suppose).

As batteries become less expensive and the price of powered trollies comes down... and the average golfer age continues to rise... they will only become more popular.

Trolleys have been a fixture in the states for a long time. I bet I’ve had a speedcart for twenty years. I played in Ireland in 2013. Didn’t see one three wheeled trolley. In fact when I didn’t use a caddie the rental trolleys were in very poor shape.
