I am curious - are there any residential courses which you can point to where the houses look better than what was there before they were built? I realize that there are some beautiful homes bordering courses but somehow to me golf's greatest setting is nature itself.

To me, residential golf course is define as “out of bounds in someone’s backyard” vs “I see houses”. I have no idea what definition is being used here and won’t look. The former stinks and is hard (my home course) vs the latter where golf came before housing and profits.

I know this list is stupid, but I have two questions anyway:

(I haven't played either of these courses, so relying on the treehouse.)

1. Doesn't TPC Sawgrass have houses on it? Lots of TPC courses on this list, but I don't see Sawgrass.

2. I know Stone Eagle is in a private community, but on Google Maps I see no homes on the course. How can it be considered residential?

After being a rater for 10-12yrs till the shakeup, I'm pretty sure that the list is based on PLANNED golf communities & courses that are Private or Resort. I don't see any 100% public golf courses.

1.  No, the TPC at Sawgrass is surrounded by a moat to drain the course, there are no homes inside the moat or even very close at hand to the tournament course.

2.  No homes can be built above 1000 feet in Palm Desert.  The driving range at Stone Eagle is just shy of 900 feet so there are a couple of lots up there, and a bunch more down by the clubhouse.  Everything else is off limits for homes.

 8)  This should really be entitled "Most Expensive Exclusive Private Residential Courses."  The majority that I've played or toured are fenced in communities with rent-a-cops at the gatehouse...

After first review, I had to count and it looks like if you're trying to sell upmarket real estate, the big names certainly dominate, T Fazio 22.5%, Nicklaus 19.5%, Dye 7.0%, Weiskopf 6.5% , Palmer 3.5%, Doak 1%.

Here is the GolfWeek criteria. Not sure that makes it any clearer.

These focus on courses within residential developments and include both private clubs and public-access tracks.

Marketing 101. I live nearby. These lots are not on the course (a good thing). While the club/course is in the residential category, there are virtually no homes near the course which allows the architecture to shine. I personally rank the course itself above the other “residentials” in the valley.
