The Front Porch

I've seen this used to describe golf architecture - perhaps a green feature, but what does it mean and could you provide an example?  Thanks.

I use this term as follows:


Think about the 7th hole at Yeamans Hall Club (The Road Hole)...


Let's say the flagstick is back left, and you've hit a poor drive down the left side leaving you with a long approach that must carry the bunker in the front left, and stop very quickly (a low percentage shot).  I would do my best to get the ball to the front edge of the right side of the green (the "front porch") and see if I can make 4 from there.

The fifteenth hole at Ballyhack has a "front porch." It is an alternate fairway off the tee that provides a shorter second shot.
