I'd like to use halftime here to thank Jeff, Mike, and Tom for finding a way to have a professional back-and-forth-and-forth about golf course architecture, when the potential to get derailed (angry) was quite vivid.

Just a comment about the returning nines, it does have a fairly significant impact on revenue.  I play a lot down in Hilton Head at Palmetto Dunes.  They have three courses there.  An Arthur Hills design, a George Fazio design and Robert Trent Jones design. The Jones course does not have returning nines.  I sometimes like to get in a quick nine at the end of the day and the Jones course isn’t really an option as you would end up being stuck a couple miles from the club house when it gets dark.  Play wraps up there when they know golfers won’t finish where as the other two courses let out players much later for nine holes.  I would think most non returning 18 hole designs would have a similar issue.  Of course there are ways around this but not always easy.

Mark,

I think all the gca are saying about the same thing.  Returning nines isn't such a bad idea that you actively argue against it, but not so great that when the situation really calls for it, you don't force an arguably worse course to get it.  Ditto on par 72, unless you happen to believe, as an architect that the future is par 70 to save land, or whatever.  Or, you prefer to have the 5th par 3 or something like Stanley Thompson.

A lot of the guesses were wildly wrong:  look at David Davis's post - he knew what the top 10 were, has played all ten, and assumed they were par 72!

you really like to point out how people, of all types are "wrong", we know that

I think the point may have been that a par of 72 at all courses could lead to being able to compare scores across the world or at least regionally

of course one course is not the same as another, and that is the emphasis of great golf, it is not bowling LOL

additionally, par does not matter in match play, so who cares really about par?

of course, the next fact check you might post would be "how many top 10 courses are 18 holes"?

thank you for pouring gasoline on yourself and lighting the match, we are all comfortably numb to you

I'm going to guess 4   72's

and that  half (5) come back to clubhouse

It's three par-72 courses, and four that return to the clubhouse.  Answer was posted pretty early, and I confirmed in the middle of the first page.
