Shell's Wonderful World of Golf - New Venues and Players
« on: April 06, 2020, 01:46:44 PM »
OK, since a lot of us have time to kill, I was talking about the She;;'s Wonderful world of Golf series with a friend of mine.  I really wish they had kept going with those.
If you had some choices, what venues would you like to see them played at and what players.  I would love to see a match played at Myopia Hunt between Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
Who else and where?  Doesn't even have to be professionals gofers playing.  Could be sports celebrities, movie actors, etc.  I would love to see some of the top ranked amateurs playing in these (no prize money).  Lets have some fun.

Okay. I'll give a crack at this. How 'bout former and current NFL QB's Tony Romo vs. Aaron Rodgers at Cypress Point Club? A battle to determine who the best golfing quarterback is.

You do understand that most of those [modern] matches were paid for by the venues for promotional purposes, right?

Myopia Hunt Club isn't likely to pay to watch Spieth and JT.

But, assuming that the money is not a factor, what I'd like to see is a match between ANY two pros at Pacific Dunes or Ballyneal -- using 1970's and 80's clubs.

P.S.  It's too bad nobody was filming the Goodale-Doak v Hiseman-McEvoy match at Painswick.  I'd have liked to see how close we all came to making an ace on #10.  Three of the four were pretty close.

Ira, I'll one up you and go for J.B. Holmes vs. Bryson DeChambeau. You're easily looking at a 6 hr. match if the wind is up at Ballybunion.  ;D ;D ;D

Very good.
Sad to realize, in an Heraclitus 'you can't step into the same river twice' sort of way, that I'd have no interest in watching Tiger or Phil or Els etc play in such a match.

Sadder still, in an 'I'm getting old' sort of way, is to realize that I can hardly think of a single younger pro that I'd want to watch either.
Maybe Ian Poulter.
Against Brandel Chamblee.

What about that troll poster banned last year by Ran, named Nick (forget his last name) vs. the other fictional character who was also banned the same day? Play it at Trolling Golf Club.

How about Koepka vs. Ditka? But to give Koepka a fighting chance Ditka has to play left handed?  At Ditka's Bob O'Link.

Yes, I would want to watch Coach Ditka play left-handed, otherwise Brooks would have no chance.

How about Daly and Bubba?  That's who I wanted at Myopia...

Tiger Woods versus Ben Hogan at Pinehurst #2.  1960 equipment.  Bet it would be a good match.

Bobby Jones vs. Harry Vardon at the Old Course.

I never tire of John Daly v. Adam Scott at Trump Nat'l in Rancho Palos Verdes in 1966:

I would like to see a new format, foursomes. Same time, same place.

All the Strantz courses, Highland Links, Ohoopee Match Club and Boston GC, Cabot Links/Cliffs, Streamsong, Tata Iti, Barnbougle, Ballyneal.

I’d prioritize pros  that play fast and like to discuss course architecture, preferably ones that have been involved w design (Ogilvy, Clayton, Blair, Crenshaw, Mickelson, Spieth, etc)

I thought of another one.  I would love to see Tom Watson and Lee Trevino in their prime face off at Sand Hills in Nebraska.  I love seeing all these combinations of players and venues.
