Phoenix-Area Private Clubs
« on: April 01, 2020, 01:05:59 AM »
I'm staying in Phoenix for the next month or two and trying to see if any private clubs in the area would give me playing privileges while I'm here.   I already belong to two clubs up north, so not looking for a full membership, but I figured given the fact that most clubs will lose 10-25% of their members, someone might give me something that I need.   Any ideas?

That would make the club no longer private.

Whisper Rock probably has the best membership and the best practice facility.  It also has 36 holes. Most of the 35 tour players play the Mickelson course and the senior players the Fazio course.

Phoenix CC offers  a national membership. They might be interested in a 2 month trial.

Probably unlikely!   In the Great Recession, clubs lost 1/3 of their members on average, so it would be proactive now to take proactive steps.    I suspect many will be denial until they are in serious financial trouble.

Great idea!

You should be the guy to call them up, tell them that.... then try to alleviate their new found problem by taking out your check book before strolling to the first tee.

But, dont forget to dress in all black and carry a scythe...!... ;) ;D

In the meantime, go buy a Troon Card and enjoy some quality golf. The courses will all be "deserted" anyway as PHX is (partially) "shelter in place" as of yesterday.

Public access and resort golf in PHX is on par with private golf anyway so I dont see the downside.
Whisper Rock, as an example, is a great CLUB that has two (ok) courses indistinguishable from Troon North, the Boulders, etc.

No F&B for sure. Would not be surprised if golf courses were closed (like here in Chicago) when the virus shows up in force.

Why not create an app that tracks private club membership mentions in obits?

Ian, sounds like you are advocating putting your head in the sand.   I suspect I will find something that makes sense.

Most private clubs are allowing play for members only without guests. It would be a disaster to see a new guy playing and be told that he is some guy in from hot zone that we are letting play until this blows over.

Au contraire, JW...I'm advocating tact, prudence and efficiency.
while you're "cold-calling" clubs looking for a "distressed deal", you could instead be pegging it up a new quality course every day.

Private clubs do not yet have the issue you describe. They may but Will take 3-6 months.
And, if you did find one, it sure as hell wont be Desert Mountain, the Rock or Paradise Valley. It's going to be some marginal track in Mesa.

My point is that there are a TON of better options out there without trolling.

For your dream to happen, there will already have to have been board meetings, member communication, processes in place, etc. No chance.
The body is still warm and you want to remove the boots and gold jewelry.

JW, you will come across as a buzzard.
Your $2,000 aint going to move their needle.

Ian,

Everyone I've talked to has been polite and receptive.  Give me a little more credit than that.   You may be right that it's premature, but I suspect I will find something attractive.  I agree it won't be Whisper Rock!

Best,

Jon

I hear you and I apologize. The world is, in fact, full of those who choose to NOT tell you the awful truth. Professional platitudes prevail. I just dont subscribe...sorry.

For once though, I agree with J-Kav, Jon.

You're coming from Chicago (I'm guessing) where one of my best buds is a radiologist and is live-texting us from the ER at a hospital as he "loses count" of all the healthy 40-60 year old men coming in with C-19 starting on Monday night. He says that 50% that go on ventilators wont make it.

Not sure how ANY golf course will feel about ANY Chicago people flying down to share their space. Cook County is a "hot spot".
Do your part and stay away...seriously.

If I were a Phoenix club, I'd sell memberships for the next few months to all comers, provided that they accept to get no refund if the course will close due to "act of God". What a great way to shift the risk at the expense of anti-social elements :)

Although AZ is now  " stay at home"  there are exceptions with Recreation one of them:

Outdoor recreation activities: any outdoor recreation area, park, site or trail that provides opportunities for outdoor recreation with social distancing such as walking, hiking and biking. This includes golf courses if restrictions on food and beverage service under Executive Order 2020-09 are followed.

Here @ My " active adult " community
Club Houses and restaurants closed, Patios closed. Halfway house open.    Also, no Pickleball, Bocce, Tennis  and pools are closed. Even the dog park is closed. But, 2 of our 3 courses are open. 4 carts for 4 golfers. 2 cart rule waived. Walking available. No pull carts or caddies are available. .  No water coolers & no bunker rakes provided, flagstick in ,, foam barrier in cup allows ball to go in but removable with putter so no hands on flagstick. Our tee sheets are full. 10 minute intervals.  .

Public courses have dropped their rates before the usual after Easter rate drop. Yes, the Troon Card is a good deal but it's not a club. Being America's Guest is a good thing here if you can swing it at privates.

Desert Forest has a national membership.Give it a try.
