Golf & GCA related Dog Names?
« on: March 26, 2020, 03:29:55 PM »
Somewhat OT, but in today's day and age perhaps a fun topic?

We have a 6 year old hunting dog named after my favorite golfer of all time, Seve. A pretty fun and unique name for a dog, I think.

We're likely going to be bringing home a 2nd dog in about a week. This particular pup was scheduled to go to Canada, but since the border is closed the family is going to wait until the next litter. Therefore our breeder asked if we would be interested on short notice.

The name of the next dog has been of HOT debate at our dinner table. I'd personally like to keep the Euro Ryder Cup theme from the 80s/90s going but I'm being overruled slightly.

Anyway, I would be curious to hear what folks here have named their dogs, in particular if there is a golf related tie in. Or perhaps any fun dog stories as it relates to dogs.

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy through all of this.

Pat

Sadly I don't have a dog with a golf related name (ours is Almond, for reasons beyond me).  Doesn't Faldo sound like a name for a dog?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Seve is a great name!

I have an 8 month old bernedoodle we call Alister. I laugh and also feel a little dumb every time the vet calls him Dr. Alister MacKenzie! Instead of "Come here", we have been training him to come to me on the words "Doctor Mac".

If he ever has a brother or sister I've been thinking about Tilly or Walter... I hope some poor golf nerd out there has a Scottish Terrier named Old Tom Morris

Pat, I started a similar discussion 6 years ago as we were about to receive our latest puppy. I received lots of help then so I am sure you will get heaps of input!

We now have another puppy since - 4 in all, albeit 2 left us before #3 arrived. Their names:

Troon (liked the sound of it, not necessarily the course)
Pebble
Kauri (parents both from NZ & their kennel names both started with "K")
Bandon

I loved some of the suggestions (Divot, Bunker +++) but my wife got all naming rights.

Now might also be a good time to start another "dogs & golf" picture thread? God luck with the new arrival - some happy news at a terrible time.

A few of the names I've thrown around:

Jose ("Jo") - Certainly would complete the "Spanish Armada"
Bernhard
Rory
Monty
Arnold
Bobby

Pat-I’ll go on record as not liking Bernhard. Just sayin. :)

Pat,

Seve's Ryder Cup sidekick was Jose' Maria Olazabal, affectionately referred to by his nickname,  "Ollie".

Seve' and Ollie seems an obvious choice.

None of my dogs have had golf names.

The best one I remember was Archie Baird's little terrier, Niblick.

Other golf dogs I have met include Bogey, Troon, and Tillie.  And RIP to Bunker the cat, from Ballyneal.

A friend who's a Terrier lover once told me there's one named "Foozle" down in SW Connecticut. Pretty cool name for a dog.

Our 13.5 y.o. yellow lab is known as "the Bear" to everyone in our family and in the neighborhood, for that matter.
She's half purebred English Lab and half American Field Lab and always looked like a polar bear.

She is really called "Lulu", but our kids called her Lu-Bear and then just "Bear".

She can no longer walk and, believe it or not, these few weeks at home are a blessing for me and my wife as we prepare to say our goodbyes to her.

Back in 2013, she was walking with me on our course in late October and she met Jim Urbina and George Waters.

So, she has some GCA chops now....which is nice...;-)

Is Don Placek's Golden Retriever also named Bunker?

We've had Bunker (RIP) and Putter. The newest one is Bhraggie, for Ben Bhraggie in Golspie.

Other alternatives for Bhraggie included Golspie, Dornoch, Struie, Andrews, Raynor, Redan, Berwick, Prestwick, Skibo, Mulligan / Mullie and more.

We clearly brainstormed for awhile.  :)

My black Labradors are named Pudge and Chunk. I suppose either could be used to describe a “fat” shot. But since they’re dogs, it ain’t body shaming.

A buddy of mine named his dog Callaway.  I've also run across a dog named Wedge.

How about Old Mac or Kingsley or Dormie?

After this winter and early spring I think I'd name my dog "Reload", "Reboot", or "2.0".

For 14 years, we were blessed to have a Brittany Spaniel named Palmer. A great name for a wonderful dog.

Damn, should have called one of my bull terrifier crosses Saint but Fidget was already named from the rescue home and Maud was the only name we could agree on for the second rescue. Next time. Aalthough I have always wanted to name one after my mother-in-law Diane — Di for short.

When I got my first dog, I was Superintendent at Pine Tree Golf Club. I named him Wilson, after Dick Wilson.
