Podcasts to pass the time while in lockdown!
« on: March 25, 2020, 10:57:39 AM »
My teenage son has recently introduced his old dad to the world of podcasts. I am hooked!

With more time on my hands than I've ever known podcasts are the only thing keeping me sane while I do jobs around the house. Perfect golfing weather has teasingly arrived just as all UK golf courses have closed!

My no 1 favourite is TalkinGolf History.  If you've not found it yet give it a listen!

https://talkingolf.com/show/talkingolfhistory/

A three part special on Alistair MacKenzie is due out any day featuring Sean Tully, and I believe Adam Lawrence is lined up to participate in one shortly on Harry Colt.

I listen to The fried egg podcast, the golfers journal, and no laying up as well as the talking golf history one you mentioned. I especially liked the 2 part podcast on Seth Raynor they did with Anthony Pioppi.

Derek Duncan’s Feed The Ball Podcast is the best golf architecture-related podcast on the market, in my opinion. Longer format talks, usually close to two hours.

I love Death, Sex & Money with Anna Sale. It covers everything else besides golf.

Worth mentioning that some GCA posters are involved with these ventures and some GCA contributors are sometimes to be heard as guest participant/interviewee.

I’ve wrote an article recently about some of the best ones out there a couple of months ago-

https://www.ukgolfguy.com/golf-blog/the-best-podcasts-for-2020

There are so many good ones but anything with Rod Morri, Mike Clayton, John Huggan, Derek Duncan or Andy Johnson involved is pretty much guaranteed to keep me entertained.

I did Rod Morri's podcast while I was in Australia for the Renaissance Cup, but I don't know if he has released it yet.  I enjoyed his questions.

Shane Bacon and Max Homa have a new one -- Get a Grip. I would buy stock in those two if I could -- they are very funny/interesting on a variety of topics.

Tom,

Your Rod Morri, The Thing About Golf, podcast isn't out yet. Rod's really good at keeping them going with good questions so I'm sure it's terrific.

We did one this morning with Billy Foster (Seve's caddy from 1991-1995) and Tony Johnstone celebrating the 40th anniversary of Seve's first win at Augusta. Found at The Good Good Golf Podcast.

Rod's great.  The problem I have is that there seem to be so many different Rod Morri golf podcasts titles that I miss some.  So the one he did semi-regularly with you and Geoff Shackleford seems to have disappeared?
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Rod Morri is the best in the golf podcast business at hosting. He's good in everything but his "Thing About Golf" one-on-one podcasts are exemplary and really show his talents.

You're thinking of the State of the Game podcast with Morri, Shack and Clayton, and they're still going. They released one recently.

I enjoyed the The Fried Egg podcast I did with Garret Morrison. He is a bright, well-informed interviewer. The main subject is John Low and the first ball rules, but we touched other bases.

One of my favorite non-golf related series is "How I Built This" with Guy Raz, although there certainly are lesson to be found relating to this world as well.

The subjects of the interviews are folks who have built their own businesses, each with a different path and a different story.

Raz does a good job of letting the individual be the story, not the business.

I like Guy Raz.  I'm currently listening to "13 Minutes to the Moon" a BBC world service about the Apollo programme.  Fascinating and inspirational.

Agreed. See Garrett Morrison's podcast at The Fried Egg on TPC Sawgrass course. He interviews several of the people involved in its design, construction and later changes. History at its best. It is a huge thing to be able to talk with people involved with an important course.

Imagine being able to do similar interviews with those involved with NGLA, ANGC, Riviera or any number of other important golf courses.

My hope is that these podcast sites will continue to interview designers, builders and developers who had roles in the best modern courses before the chance is lost forever.
