Most of them can't get unemployment as they unfortunately live under the radar of the federal government. Any ideas would help.

Does this mean what I think it means?

:'( :'(

Pennsylvania is allowing golf in limited capacities later this week, my home state has yet to allow any play and time will tell. I got a few calls from caddies in Philly this am who are really concerned about their future employment. I read the Bandon Dunes caddie fund thread but now it's hitting closer to home. Many of these guys ( and girls) will have little or no work coming out of winter. I'm empathetic to their plight, and the scary thought of no health care for a great majority of them.

I was thinking that with proper education and help from clubs that use caddies, we could help them. Even limiting short term loops to forecaddy only jobs would throw many a lifeline.  Lots of us tend to carry our own and for us a caddie is a luxury but is there job really a danger to the golfers to the point we eschew them from the game entirely. Most of them can't get unemployment as they unfortunately live under the radar of the federal government. Any ideas would help.

Archie, I get it, they need help like a lot of people. But they don't "unfortunately" live under the radar. They choose to live under the radar. There is a big difference. Also self employed people are eligible to collect unemployment under the current situation. The $600 federal unemployment payment is not prorated for part time workers either. Self employed people are also eligible for the PPP loan which may be forgiven under the right conditions. If they declare any income they would be eligible.

The real key for future prosperity of caddies may lay in training. Why does an adult become a caddie and how could those skills be transitioned into another industry? How much labor is required to grow, harvest and distribute marijuana? As a matter of fact it seems a shame to import labor from outside the country for any agricultural product as unemployment is in double digits.

Approximately how many caddies are there in the country that need employment?

Ron , I'm not condoning not paying taxes as onerous as they may be ( I'm all in for a consumption tax) but the real question should have been if golf is legal should caddies be illegal at this point in time. Better one person pulling the ball out of the hole than four, no?

John, I took a quick look online and they said that 150 courses nationwide offer caddies for hire. Have to think that's way low. Maybe closer to 500  ???  (know you love emoji's)

multiply that by 25 per club and you get 12,500 . Sounds low but who knows. Out of that maybe 25% are full time loopers. Not many relative to all the people currently getting aid and comfort. So, if nothing else I'd like to lobby that they are allowed to go back to work!

If properly equipped and coached might caddies be at least as safe as without caddies?

I've played in member/guests where caddies are each assigned a hole. One in the fairway, one on the green. It would work before all the golfers quit because they remember an eight week quarentine being more fun.

Next week?

Matchplay will be great fun.
Different tee for each player and presumably alternate on holes. Toss to decide which order you start? As long as its not a serious comp. then no one can get upset because its "unfair". I like this idea and think it will remind people what needs to be observed throughout.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Governor Murphy allows Golf Courses to open in NJ this Saturday May 2, 2020.   Obviously there will be social distancing required and so forth.
Not clear if there will be a requirement for only twosome play.
Off to Springdale G C saturday with my tools and trolley and my regulars.

NJ State Golf Association indicates this is "subject to restrictions and procedures to be announced in the coming hours by the Governor's office".

Order also includes opening State Parks which have been closed.

So.....   golf course use restricted to 50% of capacity so we are doing twosomes at 16 minute intervals. Not clear why 16 minutes but the reason for that will be clearer at some point.

Tee times for two weeks just about all booked up within a day.

Better than nothing.

I feel an epic fail coming. Too many golfers don’t think the rules apply to them to play like obedient robots.

At some point we have to venture out again. Unless you have owned a small business yourself it's hard to imagine the damage that may already be irreparable. Common sense dictates that those most at risk need to stay away from others for a while longer.

As to golf rules I don't get the twosome deal with sixteen minute tee time gaps. If it's a bridge to the eventuality of golf again it's better than nothing. People have to be responsible, and it's probably not as bad as allowing many licensees to get behind the wheel.

I worked for the government for a while. If you want to open a golf course at 25% capacity it's all quite simple. Foursomes with eight minute tee times become twosomes with 16 minute tee times.

It's a better option than foursomes at 32 minute tee times or singles at eight.

The math is pretty simple, if you want 60-70 players a day so be it. But where is the science in twosomes. Just open up from 10-2 with normal play with or without carts. Rather than run twosomes from 8-5pm

You are making the governments argument for them. By allowing the same number of golfers into a smaller time frame you increase the likelihood of close interaction in the common areas.

Don't try to make sense of something that is completely arbitrary, without any basis in data or logic.  Still no golf in Maryland.  But in my neck of the woods, there is a 7-mile shared use trail, asphalt ten feet wide.  Full every day from dawn to dusk with walkers, runners and bikers.  Traveling at different rates of speed and every time they pass one another in the same direction they're within 6 feet. Also passing within 6 feet in opposite directions if folks are two abreast.  And we can't play golf (as singles, twosomes or foursomes) on 100+acre courses?  Makes zero sense.

Meanwhile, landscaping and construction are "essential."  Around here I see mostly Hispanic guys crammed 3 and 4 at a time into the cabs of the pickups, and I wonder what kind of government thinking values their health so lightly and the landscaping of the Chevy Chase elite so highly.

For every eight golfers there will be that one guy who can't live without knowing what everyone shot or telling you about his day. It will take a police escort to get him to leave the parking lot.

if we have two  groups per hole that's four people every two hundred yards on an average put simply. The common areas are verboten per decree here in NJ. So it shouldn't enter the equation at all. Golf is going to get thru this I'm not so sure about the restaurant industry. I feel for anyone not able to do a majority of their business thru take out or delivery.

The problem is that the government is not here to control but enable. Without knowledge that is real they are helpless to do that service.
