To me, it feels about 1/100th as risky as going to the grocery store.
Probably less. Of course, the grocery store is a need, golf is not. So let's compare it to other allowed outdoor activities…

And if so, I'm struggling to see the reasoning if enough precautions are taken. I've seen people playing basketball, tennis, soccer, frisbee, etc. in the past few days. Running or walking at Presque Isle… along with hundreds of other people on the same five-foot-wide path… All of those seem less safe/more dangerous than playing golf, locally, with enough precautions.

P.S. I support the raised cup liner myself. The pool noodle or PVC still have the ball sitting in the cup.

It is becoming quite clear that politicians can not be held accountable for the ignorance of their supporters.
Stop it!  That's 3 in a week.  Spot on, with this, too.  Though when the politicians are ignorant and/or stupid too, you have a real problem.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

The whole point is that ANY unnecessary social contact is a possible transmission that can be prevented.  Any socialising (and unless you play alone, that's what golf is) is a possible transmission and is not essential.  Going to the grocery store for food you need (and not things you don't need and not more often than strictly neccessary) is a possible transmission but is neccessary.

And yet people are going outside, they're going for walks, they're playing tennis, they're doing all of these types of things. As I wrote, and as is allowed even in the "stay at home" orders. Ohio allows golf. NY allows golf. Other states allow golf with the proper precautions. Playing golf locally is one of the safer activities on that list. Who would I be playing with? My daughter, who lives here, and nobody else. So my odds? Pretty darn small. Odds I'll go nuts if I have to stay inside and can't do anything outside? Much higher. I'm more likely to come within 20 feet of someone who isn't my daughter playing catch in my own yard when someone walks by on the sidewalk than I am walking with my daughter on the golf course.

Edit to add that I just saw this was sent from Goat Hill Park:

Quote
As we continue to follow Governor Newsom’s mandate for social distancing while allowing for outdoor physical activities including solitary hiking, beginning Wednesday, March 25, Goat Hill Park will transition to a new reservation type - the Single Player Tee Sheet. Each tee time will hold a single player. Everyone must check in at the front gate and must maintain all social distancing measures while on property. Below are the details of the new system. We need everyone to respect this new system if we are going to continue to serve the community as an outdoor source of exercise, fresh air and sunshine.

As of today (and more tomorrow), most publics on Long Island are open for play.  That includes county munis and some town munis.  Many have stated they are following the state's lead and will essentially do as Bethpage does.

The Town of Huntington has kept its two munis closed and gone as far as urging residents to report gatherings at town parks/courses.  Yet the town also will review its decision to keep the courses closed this Friday.

Yep. The thing is, I understand odds and percentages. We are at risk with everything we do. We accept a certain amount of risk every day.

I’m not going to play soccer or basketball as that’s well inside 6’, as is going for a jog at the park. But other things? Relatively safe. Walking. Playing with only the person living with me. Etc.

Wisconsin has said no.  Illinois yes.  No clubhouse, reservations via Internet or phone.  Walking only.  Social distancing.  Governor previously has said no.

From England Golf:
It is England Golf’s position that this deeply regrettable, but highly necessary and responsible course of action must be implemented with immediate effect and be maintained until further notice. The government has identified an urgent need to introduce new restrictions on public life and on non-essential businesses opening their doors. This has been done to limit the spread of the coronavirus and relieve the growing pressure on our National Health Service.Keeping golf courses open is simply no longer compatible with the updated policy of government which is designed to save lives in a time of national emergency. The health and wellbeing of the nation is the only consideration that matters at this moment in our history. These are incredibly testing times for the country. The golf industry cannot be shielded from the economic and social ramifications caused by this temporary shutdown of normal life.
And a statement from Scottish Golf:
With this in mind, Scottish Golf asks that all golfers in Scotland refrain from golfing until further notice. We understand that this advice will have a significant impact on golf clubs across the country and we will continue to consult with industry partners to provide clubs with all information and support possible during this time of deep uncertainty. We know that these decisions are difficult ones to make, but right now, it is our shared responsibility to prioritise the health of our local communities by working together to follow the Government guidelines. In doing so, this will ensure that we get the opportunity to play the game that we all love as soon as it is safe to do so.

Steve,

In post 198 above I linked to the published UK Govt restrictions -

Here are the UK Govt 23rd March restrictions -https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874732/230320_-_Revised_guidance_note_-_finalVF.pdfWorth reading the section entitled "Outdoor leisure" in relation to the statements and decisions made by the EGU/SGU etc about courses closing. As an side, do UK private members clubs and golf facilities have to do what the EGU/SGU etc say? Not suggesting they shouldn't or that the actions that have taken place recently shouldn't have done but curious to know. "Asking for a friend" is how some might phrase it.atb

Yes, government restrictions were made in UK and the Golf Societies commented. Happens in the USA too. See conflicting restrictions from NY, PA, NJ, CA, IL  with AZ as referenced in this thread. .

Hodgepodge in Oregon. Bandon Dunes Resort is closed. My semi-private in the Portland suburbs is open, no power carts, no rental trolleys, no food/beverage even takeout.  My private on the Oregon coast is open with rental carts, but no guests, food service 6 hrs a day with prescribed pick-up points.

On a roll.  4 in a row I completely agree with.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Sure, exercise alone or with those living under the same roof is fine.  In the UK we are allowed one form of exercise each day, with that qualification.  Going to meet with your regular 4 ball is unnecessary social contact and is a potential transmission point.  I went for a bike ride alone this evening (expressly allowed) and was disappointed to pass one group of four lads (with all the gear) meeting up to go for a ride together.  That behaviour risks transmission.  It also risks forcing our government to ban outdoor exercise completely, if people won't follow the guidelines.

A peloton of bikers becomes a vacuum of sorts. It looks to me that the lead rider is passing fluids in the form of microscopic droplets onto the riders behind him. Similar to when you smell the perfume of the person walking past you.

Was thinking of heading over to Prairie Dunes as the course is open with the typical precautions. But then they said anyone coming to Reno county from an area that has a self quarantine in place (like St. Louis) can't play before quarantining locally for 14 days. So there goes those plans

It’s an interesting sociological study to watch people look for loopholes in a crisis

Management at my club actually said they were looking for a loophole to allow play ::)

I pray we may be overreacting
I pray you and all our loved ones are all safe

I for one have locked down as much as possible (take out food) lucky to get a decent portion of a grocery delivery

I’ve turned down lesson requests and basically stating financial ruin but it’s what we’ve chosen
