Golf Channel moving to Stamford Connecticut

Maybe this explains the exodus of on air talent?

As someone who grew up in Stamford, this seems crazy to me.  Maybe they will take over my old high school for office space?

Real Reasons:

   Saving $$$$

   State-issued tax breaks

Cheap, cheap space (big RE footprints widely available in Stamford)

   Cost-cutting, cost-cutting, cost-cutting!

They be paying stupidly big bucks for PGA rights!

The story Steve linked to explains it in part. NBC has 300,000 square feet of space in its NBC Sports Group headquarters in Stamford (it leases half of the old Clairol plant). Even with NBC Sports, NBCSN, the Olympics unit and offices for regional networks, there's room left over. Put Golf Channel there to fill it and you can sell the Orlando building. Makes sense except for everyone who'll have to move, and worse for those who are left behind.

It's also the way of the world in TV. Your local station may have studios in your city, but master control might be located halfway across the country with a bunch of co-owned stations, where a couple people do the work of dozens. Fiber optics makes it possible.

Sorry Golf Channel staff who are going to familiarize themselves with some of the highest taxes in the nation, while leaving a no income tax state.

It's not just taxes but the overall cost of living that deterred me from even thinking of moving back there.  Housing costs are "just a bit higher" than Traverse City.  Even 25 years ago, the golf magazines (both based in NYC area) started letting their employees live remotely because the cost of living was so high.

When Brian and I were working at Round Hill we tried getting tickets to Jerry Springer, which was filmed a block away from our apartment.  Perhaps Golf Channel shares a space with them?  Hopefully they utilize they Springer Show format, too.  Add a little spice to Morning Drive.

Maybe they can do some Maury-like DNA testing to determine who the REAL architect is for some of the worst golf courses in Connecticut?

But that can work out quite nicely when it's time to leave....

This is surely just a logical consolidation of administrative operations. The Golf Channel is but one aspect of NBC Sports’ presence in Orlando - the arguably bigger operation GolfNow is based there too and will also be moving to the parent company’s head offices in Stamford. Why pay two lots of overheads when everything can be run from under one roof?

There is no reason why a studio presence cannot be maintained in Florida - after all, that’s where all the players live. A studio involves a relative handful of people however - even less if you simply hire the facility for a few hours whenever needed.

It seems like business common sense to me.

No, my HS was Rippowam, which was repurposed 25 years ago after the baby boomers were through with it.

If Stamford Catholic can close it reinforces the trend that we are seeing across the country. It was one of the most venerable catholic high schools in the state of Connecticut.

A bifurcation of threads here. I'll wade in with some thoughts.

Access to talent? Assuming the move leaves no studio presence in Florida, the access to on-air talent in metro is enormous.

Closing of non-public schools? Shrinkage at the middle-school level is quite the trend. Given the church's problems, not shocking to see it impact its institutions. We've lost a few catholic high schools in Buffalo since my youth, and I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two more shutter their doors. The cost of college is drawing many dollars away from non-public, secondary education.

I’ll bet they miss the bugs, humidity and hurricanes not to mention the cultural significance of Orlando versus NYC. ;)

Great move...perhaps they got the State Tax breaks that were not an enticement for GE?  Excellent economic development by the Malloy/Lamont team.

I am sure the product will be much better in that they will have much better access to talent in the NYC area with little need to shop at Walmart they can now go to the Westchester or Greenwich Ave.  Win-win for all.

While Orlando is not a place I'd choose to live, I'd much rather live there than Stamford, CT. I'd be pretty upset about this if I were a Golf Channel employee.

How long will it take to spot Matt Ginella on Greenwich Ave. drinking a $16 latte and dropping knowledge on Blind Brook Club?

Tim,

While I recognize your post is dripping with sarcasm, you must know Matt is no longer with the Golf Channel. I guess his brand is already beyond them  ::) ?

The last person "dropping knowledge" on anyone at the Blind Brook Club would be Ginella. That might be akin to Bieber teaching the New York Philharmonic!

The big question, if I were an employee, concerns CT's Income Tax which ranges from about 3% to about 7% depending on income as opposed to FL's ZERO income tax. Will there be a salary adjustment upwards?

Also, the state sales tax for CT is 6.35% statewide while FL's is 6.5% or more depending on the city where one shops.

CT has great public schools, so if you were looking at private school for your kids in Florida that's an expense you can set aside.
