Golf course to detention basin: Harris County Flood Control District set to acquire Raveneaux Country Club by late January

“If the transaction is approved by commissioners court, we will enter into a lease agreement with Raveneaux where they will have one year to continue operating the club and golf course, and then after the year is over with, then they will have to wind down all of their business and close up shop,”

I've played Northgate nearby, a similar club by BvH with a large clubhouse, numerous times and had a friend who has been a member at both (I didn't think highly of Northgate, which he said had the better course).  My bet is that the club will not close without a big fight (the cancellation of the lease and the reliance of area homeowners on the length of its term may have some impact, though the government over the long run will likely prevail).  I suspect that the owners of Northgate would be good with the closing; not sure about the members.  The impact on home prices if the club closes will not be minor.

I grew up out at Raveneaux CC and at one time they had (2) Von Hagge/Devlin Courses, the old and new.  Mr. Devlin's son was a good friend and a regular golf partner throughout high school.  Back in the 80s an 90s Raveneaux was a very nice club; however, poor management over the years led to the decline of this property.  Champion Forest was an affluent neighborhood for the area and Raveneaux had plenty of members.  Ultimately they sold off land from the "new" course and the downward spiral continued and now here they are about to lose the whole club. My parents left Champion Forest years ago but I am sure the residents are none too pleased to lose a country club for a water plant.

Overall, the golf courses were fun to play.  Tight fairways, elevated greens and plenty of doglegs.  The courses were no match for their neighbor, Champions Golf Club, which is right across Cypress Creek.  It is nice to see that Champions has still maintained its status over the years.
