Gorse at Royal Dornoch
« on: January 12, 2020, 09:48:18 AM »
Those who have played Royal Dornoch will know how much gorse there is on the property, especially the bank to the left of 6 running along the right of 7 / right of 11.

The Royal Dornoch facebook thread recently paid tribute to Pete Dye and included a photo he took of the 6th hole from his trip there in 1963. I thought it was worth posting here (hope the link works) to show how much less gorse there was back then!

Absolutely, even photos i saw on property indicate that. Royal Dornoch is an incredible course, one of the best. It would be much better if someone bulldozed gorse out and gave it more width at rough height.

Correct James,

in the past many courses had much less gorse. Of course the obvious, cheap, proven way to keep the gorse at bay is to graze but unfortunately most courses are blind to this.

Another method used in the past was controlled burning. Not a popular method in today’s society however.
