What hole is the last photo?  Is there a current photo (anyone) that shows the now?  Does that massive waste area still exist?

David, it’s the 11th.
I don’t have a photo from the tee, but here’s a view of the 11th fairway (over on the right) from the 10th tee.

And a closer look at the green:

So, no, the waste area is gone!

Another photo of the 11th..

P.S. The way Dr. MacK used that dune behind 11 with several other holes is nothing short of genius..

Marty, thank you.

At the risk of criticizing Cypress Point, to my eyes, the fairway on the 10th has a goofy cut.  The "swerve" treatment on fairways, specifically, can it ever be the best presentation?

1.) Seems purely for aesthetics.
2.) Scale doesn't suggest the location of bays or capes invite strategic decision making
3.) Effectively makes fairways as wide as the narrowest point of the swerve
4.) Swerving around the bunkers and leaving the bunkers wrapped in rough reduces the scope and impact of the bunkers
5.) Rough-wrapped-bunkers appear to be a larger hazard than fairway-wrapped bunkers...but...if the fairway is feeding into the bunker, the fairway-wrapped-bunker's gravity field extends out into the "safe" fairway.

If the fairway here was taken on the inside of the bunkers, and the lines were along the outside of the capes, and the fairway cut further left, it would open up two other tee options: short in front of the bunker and far left of the bunker.  As it is it seems the two reasonable option are over the bunker or short left.

Thanks for sharing.

David,

I suspect Marty's photo is from a few years back like mine.  If you look at what shows on Google Maps, I believe this is closer to whats there now, where fairway now surrounds the bunker...

Thanks Kalen.  Yes, that looks more like how Melbourne was presented, where the balls fed into the bunkers all over.  Thanks

David,

That picture is a little bit confusing. IMO, it is the 3rd hole during the grown in process and prior to some tree removal on the left.

That is the 15th from the original tee--now used primarily as the tee for Ladies and Seniors--but still used as the regular tee occasionally.
Does anyone know exactly when the new--lower--tee was built?  By whom?  For those who have played both tees, what are the merits of both?

I can't imagine how scary that shot was in the thirties.

What is so interesting and I think a good decision is that so many fairways are linked, surprisingly not 8 & 9 (which I think I remember having one shared fairway in 2003/4? when I played CPC). In addition there are linkages between 1 & 14, 3 & 12, 10 & 11, and 16 & 17. I love this presentation!

Cheers

Thanks Jim

The cypress tree to the right of the tee threw me because there are no trees on the right of the back tee.

I never knew that forward tee existed. When I walked down the pathway on 15 I never realised that there was another tee to the left. Thanks for clarifying.
