Wm McMillan - 1st Pro @ Langford’s Harrison Hills - any info
« on: December 20, 2019, 06:32:55 PM »
Scotsman William McMillan is referenced in the club’s early minutes (1924) as its 1st Pro. Anyone know anything about Mr. McMilan, have a photo, etc.? I’ve done web research and have come up with nothing.

From the sound of things, he also played a role in overseeing course construction. Here’s the reference from the club minutes, dated 1924:

“William McMillan is the name of the genial Scotsman who is the club professional. He is a very capable instructor and has been kept on the jump all year long looking after the construction work...”

H. Hills is Langford’s 1924 effort, constructed for the Harrison Steel Company in Attica, Indiana. It was restored and expanded to 18 holes in 2000 by Tim Liddy. GCA has an excellent review of the course if you want to know more. If you haven’t played it, you should. Well worth the trip.

The club is making efforts to increase interest and play and is doing some history work as well. I’m a new member and offered to help by seeking info thru GCA (I’m also a member and club historian at Crooked Stick, about 90 minutes away, and a member of the St. Andrews Golf Club, St. Andrews Scotland.)

I did find this, although it doesn't mean that it is the same guy.

William McMillan born 1869 in Kirknewton, son of William McMillan and his wife Janet Harkness. The family moved to Midlothian and resided on Belmont Road, Annfield, in Colinton. Willie was appointed greenskeeper and professional at Baberton Golf Club. (1895-1902).

His name also shows up in a greenskeepers directly from 1926-32 in Indiana for "Kramer" golf club.

No photo of him Chris, but a quick search in Newsaper.com does reveal a nice article on the club from the 1924 Indianapolis News.  I can post it to the site later today.

Edit:  I've also found an obit for him.  He died fairly young (59).
