Lou,
Royal Melbourne's courses are very playable for the bogey golfer as long as one's inclination towards heroic shots is restrained.
This.  And so long as you don't slap it around as badly as I did on my visit.....

Lou - your links experience will serve you well.  Think links golf with warmer weather, fast greens and significant but not overwhelming wind.

I think I actually broke 80 on a really hot day.  I did manage to get locked into the West Paddock and had to climb a fence with clubs.  That was a bigger accomplishment.

On the first day especially, Tiger played the course very well: knowing where and which shots to hit, and with the skills to hit them all. That's telling: that the GOAT plays this course the best.

John M- I hope to experience what you report.  My gut tells me that I'll become frustrated as decent drives will leave very difficult approaches and the weaknesses of my short game are exposed.  Watching such great putters like Fowler and Thomas not being able to keep short approach putts within 5' from the hole doesn't build confidence.
If the drives are decent, you won't have overly difficult approaches. Angles are very important, though. Ripping a drive down the middle of the fairway might leave you with a tougher approach than a more conservative play to one side or the other. RM is almost as testing of the planning as the execution. Same with putting. Those approach putts you mentioned are complicated by where the player is putting from, with the real error maybe going back to the tee shot.

Anyone who's played Wolf Point and enjoyed it is likely to have a great experience at Royal Melbourne.

Interesting that Peter Thomson could drive it 275 yards with his first shot of the day with a persimmon driver and old ball, and then clear the bunker on the second hole by fifty yards all the way back in the 1960s.
Where were the rollback alliance then?

I appreciate that in some parts of the world lots of TV adverts might be causing viewer discomfort but jeez, this is the most fascinating golf I’ve seen on TV for ages and that includes recent years Majors, Ryder Cups etc etc.
And the reason?
The golf course and the way it’s set-up and the playing consequences that result.
It is a slight on golf as a whole that no significant championship(s) is held at Royal Melbourne or one of it’s nearby plays-in-a-similar-way neighbours every year.
And it’s a slight on golf as a whole that where climate conditions permit more golf courses are not set up in similar fashions.

Wait, it costs 400 quid for a visitor to play R Melbourne?

I am very happy with this tournament. The course set up promoted play that we never see on the Tour. Clown mouth; seriously?
I will keenly watch C T Pan from now on as I love the way he is flighting the ball to take advantage of the course. What about the way No 1 plays today? All manner of shots but the most certain perhaps the blast right followed by a running chip. Players using 6 irons to chip and putts from 100 ft and off the green. This is my style of golf.
I am solidly in the Intl's camp because of Patrick Reed. The question is has he become toxic? Evidently Simpson has fallen on his sword and agreed to tolerate playing with a smug cheater. I hope he loses all his matches. Not only did he brazenly cheat he then brazenly denied and now uses his lack of character to primp. Astounding. Woulds anyone choose to have him on their team again? The USA team certainly isn't living up to it's expecation?

I’m not sure I’ve seen a more spectacular course on TV. It looks like a blast to play.

Daryl,

I checked recently and the international guest rate is AUD 750 for the West ($516 US) and 550 for the East ($378).  Accompanied guest rates are considerably lower.  It is my understanding that tee times six months out are tight.

Ward,

Go get some help.  Or at least, have a couple of drinks.

Wow. I played the West two years ago at $350 AUS. Well, if the market accepts it, more power to them.

Sweet Lou
I dont understand your comment? Are you endorsing Reed's conduct and behavior? Boys will be boys?
As you well know I need no excuse to have a couple drinks and I am enjoying the heck out of this not for prime time golf with no need to blame Reed for a tipple

I was looking forward to seeing the tee shot on composite #2 (West #4) which is one of the more interesting shots on the course. However, the Golf Channel does not seem to be showing it. Does anyone know why they don't have a camera there? Are blind shots just not worth showing to a TV audience?

Has anyone heard the announcers discussing whose ball was used in the foursomes matches? Did JT and Tiger each tee off with their own ( Titleist/Bridgestone) balls on their holes, or did they agree to use 1 ball?

why aren't they using the back tee on 18?  Isn't that West #2?

Not sure if it's the reason but the new back tee on 2W is crazy close to the 17E fairway.  Using it would impact crowd flow quite significantly as spectators would not be able to get in between the 2W tee and 17W fairway.

Worst tv coverage for any televised tv event ever! How can they just skip shots with no replay? Only 2 groups on the course and we dont get to see the tee or second shots on the second hole!
These fans would fit in well at a Trump rally. Classless.

I spent much of the afternoon watching the foursomes groups play #11 and then #17. Both were extremely compelling to watch.

On 11 it seemed like most of the US players bailed left, or at least were okay with the ball feeding all the way down. The pin position lended itself to this approach more than it might have normally. The int'ls all seemed to play more to the right and a lot of them ended up in the bunker or short of the green but on the pin side. Generally it seemed like playing to the bottom left was the better strategy today based on the approaches I saw.

#17 was even more fascinating. The pin was front left, on a little hump. There was nothing protecting the hole here except a little bit of tightly mown grass and gravity, but it worked wonders. Any player who came up short was basically doomed to make bogey, and almost everyone who hit it there did. I think it was the pivotal moment in the Fowler/Thomas collapse.

Match play and team play on the ultimate strategic layout. It was absolutely delightful. The only thing that was a downer was Tiger choosing to sit the entire day; I basically bought a ticket to see the golf course and the greatest player of my generation. While the golf course was every bit as advertised, the second part was a real personal setback for me because I'm not sure how many chances I will get.

I seldom watch golf on tv anymore, unless the course is compelling.  Royal Melbourne is completely worth watching!  The most consistent coverage is of #1, and the amount of decision making that goes into each shot is awesome.  Compound that with the decision making necessary in alternate shot and its must watch tv.  Same for so many other holes.

I can't help thinking that the International side rewards us with Royal Melbourne and we counter with...can't remember who hosted in 2017.  The armchair commissioner in me (after suspending Patrick Reed) would love to see NGLA or Shoreacres hosting this event.

Although I'm not advocating for this, more of a compliment to RM, but if it was $500 a round it would not be overpriced. We should be happy it is publicly available.
