Headed to the Big Island in a week.  Is this course significant enough to warrant spending the cash to play it?  We are staying at Waikola Village and I am inclined to just play a couple of rounds there.

Hey JT...I'd say yes for a single-play.  You may be able to find a deal online or from a tour provider that could take off a few bucks.

You aren't going to have your architecture brain exercised too much, but I thought it was pretty good.

Definitely wide off the tee, but the approaches are very exacting with deep bunkers on both sides on many holes, if not steep fall-offs.  Kyle's pics show that.

It has a truly great heroic ocean hole, another par three with a great view of the resort and beach, and multiple neat uphill holes where you can make out the MK Observatory on top of the mountain behind a green...it's VERY Hawaii, and feels mature in an old-Hawaii way.

Last trip (Fall 2018), we stayed in a rented house in Waikoloa adjacent to the Waikoloa Marriott Beach (called Kolea Palace on google maps)...had a blast at the beach bar at the far end of that beach...Lava Lava Beach Club.  We also went out to eat at Manta in the Mauna Kea Hotel after golf, which was incredible...if doing that be sure to go check out the Manta Rays that come to the lights on the point below the restaurant.  Love MK's logo too.

I admit it's tough to go off-campus from the Hilton if that's where you are staying...fave restaurant there is Kamuela Provision Co.

Have fun!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I agree with Brad, and would recommend trying to spend an entire day at the resort, which feels very old-Hawaii (not just the course).  You could think of your day as golf plus sightseeing, where the sights are an old-Hawaii resort and the incredible beaches (both Mauna Kea and Hapuna).
