These kind've threads hurt my head as  my Top 100 leans a lot more to a Myopia or a Kilspindie than a Muirfiled Village and and an Ocean Course--but at I'll say this latest World Top 100 has the least "No fun" clunkers on it


in my own Top 100..
I could easily swap Palmetto for The Ocean course
Pennard for Whistling Straits
Southampton for Muifield Village
Eastward Ho for Bethpage

Very enjoyable courses, some especially good architecture, great price, often busy and sometimes slow and light on the amenities, but fine public golf with (in most cases) no frills at all -- in other words, golf: 

Lakeview - Mississauga muni - Herbert Strong
Rockway - Kitchener muni - Stanley Thompson
Doon-Classic 9 - Kitchener muni - Robbie Robinson
The Mines - Grand Rapids - Mike Devries (with the estimable J Hancock)
Copetown Woods - Hamilton - Dick Kirkpatrick
Lowville Golf Club - Burlington - Dick Kirkpatrick
St. Andrews Valley - Aurora - Rene Muylaert

I think there are at least 2 courses on the list, and probably 4, that if they were in England and Sean profiled them, would become the hidden-go-to courses for well travelled golfers past the belt notching stage.

I can think of a bunch of courses to list but from a purely golfing point of view one I’d really like to experience is RACV Healesville, Victoria, Aussie. And experience it with only circa 7-9 clubs (and maybe a rolled-back ball!).

I can't dissect a course like you guys but here are some of things I like:


Great atmosphere, friendly staff, all golf, no pool and no tennis. You are expected to play in 3.5 hours and they allow walking. Small clubhouse with a great grill room. Not a house on the course. 



The golf course has pretty generous landing areas. I would consider it a second shot course but you still need to put your drive in the right spot.


It's always in good shape, the greens are typically much faster than what you would generally find in Florida. They have taken some of the slope of the greens from when it originally opened but the speed keeps you on your toes.

It has some water but doesn't beat you to death with it like a lot of Florida courses do.


I've found that each hole is very distinct. The first time I played it 6 months later I could still remember each hole. Great par 5's that offer a variety of ways to play them. You can attack or navigate your way around the trees and waste areas. The par 3's and par 4's have a nice variety of length. It's not the hardest course but you need to be on your game to score really well. Very fair. It's just flat out fun to play.

Desert Forest - Commendable layout that is understated and I think one of the oldest desert courses.
PGA West - Stadium - I just love the difficulty and challenge of it. 
Hamilton Farm - Not saying that it should be a top 100, but enjoyed the setting and property, not the least of which is their par 3 course.   
Plainfield CC - great greens and my second favorite Ross course behind Pinehurst.  Kapalua Plantation - Majestic property with views that are captivating. Yes it is a cart course, however being in Maui playing here in the breeze reminds you this isn't home but a vacation.
BTW what is the FAQ for making sure you don't have to edit every post?  I am still clueless and try various methods.

Jeff-You mentioned the setting and property but nothing about the golf course for Hamilton Farm.The property is extreme and although I walked I don’t think I would want to do it on a regular basis. For my money too many holes playing straight uphill with the same bunker schemes both in the fairway and flanking the greens. To each his own but it wouldn’t be a course I would pick for this exercise.
