OT-Charleston SC recommendations?
« on: November 13, 2019, 01:41:20 PM »
I'm going to be in Charleston over Thanksgiving. Not interested in driving to Kiawah. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I've played Dunes West and Patriots Point. They were both good but looking to see if there are any other courses I should be checking out. Thanks.

Bulls Bay, while a bit of a drive was very cool.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

I would make a point to go play the Charleston Muni while it's still charming and fun and before they turn it into a CCFAD.

I've got a tee time on Wild Dunes Links course. I've read some mixed reviews here. I'll going to look into the Muni.

Ed, Do you know if Bulls Bay allows unescorted guests? My sister lives in Charleston and knows a few of the pro's but I'm not comfortable doing that. If they do I would have the pro at my club call the pro at Bulls Bay. I'm there over Thanksgiving so the timing may not be good.

I second the Muni recommendation. It is a very laid back and fun atmosphere.  Go see it while you still can, the renovation is beginning this winter.

If I can hijack this - my bride and I are going to Charleston for the weekend in early December.  No golf, it is my wife's birthday and she does not golf.

We do eat.   I have booked Husk and La Farfalle.

Yay, nay?  Any advice?

Definitely try to get on Bulls Bay if you don't mind making the drive. It's an excellent course.

However, you said you didn't want to drive to Kiawah -- Bulls Bay could be just as far or farther depending on where you're staying. If you're staying west/southwest of Charleston proper, Kiawah is probably closer. Otherwise Bulls Bay is closer but could still be a 30+ minute drive.

Only played it once but we were totally unescorted. Our local pro made the call and we were treated like members. Hefty green fee but a very cool course.

I've got a tee time on the Links at Wild Dunes then either the Muni, Patriots, or National. Outside shot at Bulls Bay. I think if I go down in the summer I can get on Yeamans, so I need to do that when I get a chance.

I played this muni almost by accident...simply because I saw it from a main north-south road into Charleston. It was because I played Annapolis many years previously that I recognized the pedrigree from the road....though I didn't know if it was a Raynor, Banks or a knock off.  Anyway, the course is pretty good.  I would rather play Bulls Bay.

Oh, then you're MUCH closer to Bulls Bay than Kiawah. You're probably closer to Bulls Bay than most of the other Charleston courses, actually.

Right now it looks like I’m going to play the Links at Wild Dunes, Charleston National and the Muni. Hoping for better weather than the last two weeks in upstate NY.

Before they "fixed " it would have told you to sneak on the CC of Charleston and play the 11th hole! one of the craziest holes I've ever played!

Enjoy the back nine at the Muni, and try to spot some of the templates that were likely more prominent when it was built:

The 10th is a fun short par-5 with a rumbled fairway, a small green, and is a nervous tee shot with Maybank Highway on your left the whole way.
The 11th was likely a Eden way back when, but is a nice pleasant hole now.
The 12th is a TERRIFIC short par-4. Beautiful off the tee and featuring some wonderful sandbelt esque bunkering next to the green.
After the 12th you play next to the lowcountry marsh on 13 (great views of the harbor from the green) and the 14th which is their Short.
15 is a great reachable par-5 with the marsh on your right.
I also love the short 17th and it's awesome greenside bunkering

The front nine has some nice holes as well, including the 7th which has essentially a volcano green site...where they got the fill for that a hundred years ago is beyond me.

Make sure you save some time to belly up to the bar there. The clubhouse is terrific...essentially a VFW with a pro shop. Grab a yuengling on draft and meet some of the locals.

Enjoy Charleston!

I think you have confused the proposed changes at the muni vs. Patriots Point.  Both courses are to be renovated.  The Muni will be improved but will still be operated as an affordable muni.  The total cost will be $3 million https://www.golfcoursearchitecture.net/content/troy-miller-to-renovate-charleston-municipal-golf-course

Patriots Point has had its lease acquired by Michael Bennett who is build a$325 million resort adjacent to the course.  Bennett has recently completed a hotel down town with rates starting at $500 a night as a point of reference.   It is Patriots Point that will likely become a “country club for a day” not the muni.

Sitting in the Charleston airport reflecting on the Muni, which I played today. I grew up playing a muni so I get and enjoy the environment. The cast of characters etc.

I asked about the renovation in the pro shop. I was told the routing is not changing. Basically I was told they are rebuilding the greens. The pro said that they hadn’t been touched in 90 years.

I found the course to be fun but nothing special. The 4th and the 11th are slight dogleg par 3’s. I had to hit over the top of trees that over hang the line to the center of the greens. The par 5 7th had a beautiful raised green with some wonderful bunkering but none of the remaining holes had similar green complexes. Most of the greens on the back were tiny and a challenge to hit in a stiff wind.
