Union League National ...Swainton, NJ

Where's Swainton you ask? Many people who live or vacation at the Jersey Shore don't know either. But with addition of the Union League Golf Course more and more people will find their way her in the next few years.

Got to play there yesterday afternoon with a couple of the caddies and had a great time. Even robbed the home team for a few quid LOL! Lots of changes since the Union League bought the Sand Barrens golf club two years ago.The golf course was already pretty good and now its better. Dana Fry has been brought in to tweak the original golf course that he co-designed with Michael Hurdzen, and a new nine is being built right now.

The course is relatively benign,  with big fairways that make it easy to visualize the proper tee shot. The greens have lots of movement but tend to collect rather than repel your shots. Perfect for what it is, a place for successful business executives and business owners from Philly and its environs to hang out or welcome guests. Give the decision makers at the Union League  credit for finding a gem close to their summer homes in Avalon and Stone Harbor. They looked at a lot of places to hang the shingle but likely found the best available club with upside here in Swainton.

The new holes are moving along and look even better and the medium they have to build is so good. The soils are a beautiful sandy loam that made me so jealous when I thought of what we had to deal with just 25 minutes north at Twisted Dune.

Wish them the best here and it looks like its off and running in the right direction. They certainly aren't sparing expense and the site has lots of flexibility. Interesting to see whether they redo the other holes to make a completely new course but it's probably not necessary. Time will tell but it was a fun afternoon!

So, Archie, they will now have 36 holes after the new nine is added?

No, still 27 holes at Union League. I don't know what the ultimate plan is but they ripped up an old nine to build a new one.
It looks good and the greens are smaller and I'm guessing its going to play harder than either of the existing nines. Water is in play on a few of the holes for sure. Joe the indigenous material they have to work with is off the hook. You know I'm a dirt guy LOL

So we're clear, this is the old Sand Barrens, correct?

Archie, have you played the Union League Club at Torresdale recently? What did you think?

Tom have not played the UL Torresdale since the Stephen Kay renovation. It was always a challenging and fun golf course , a little quirky, which I like! Have heard good things about it and looking forward to visiting soon. What are your thoughts?

Dana Fry was nice enough to give me a personal tour yesterday of the new nine being built at the Union League facility here in Cape May County. It reinforced an opinion gleaned from my first solo visit that something special is going on here. We looked at everything, talked to some of the construction crew and even laughed about the new bulldozers and how they differed from the pedal operated ones he learned on as an shaper for Fazio back in the 80's.

The scale of the golf course is what impressed me so much and the width of the fairways was beautiful to someone who drives it as crooked as this poster. This isn't just a retrofit but rather an incredible new golf course being built where the old one used to exist. Dana was quick to credit the leadership at Union League and the vision of GM Jeff McFadden in seeing the possibilities here.

When we first heard that the Union League  was down here looking for a site rumors circulated that they were buying first Stone Harbor and then Wildwood CC (now Shore Club). Both would have been much harder to develop into what is evolving at the old Sand Barrens for the Union League. What is fun for Dana and his crew is the fabulous medium (soils) they have to work with here and as previously stated I was so jealous imagining just how great this will drain!

Its hard to figure when the grow in for the first nine will be complete given our lack of spring down but they have already established the rough and greens on many of the holes and within a couple weeks a lot more will be done. Really can't wait to watch this come to fruition and will keep everyone posted on progress going forward.

Much thanks to Dana for the time he spent with me yesterday. We had a great walkabout and I peppered him with questions about what he was thinking in building the individual holes. What I came away with was the thought given to tying the whole together and making it flow. As we all know in the end its not the staccato of great holes but the tying together that makes a course special! Best of luck to all on a wonderful project here in our little corner of the world.
