A Fun hole or Just Funny?
« on: October 22, 2019, 01:24:53 PM »

Recently came across this hole (online, didn't play it) - a blind uphill to a plateau medium length par 3 with an aiming pole.  Does it look like a fun hole or is it so quirky that it's just funny?  Interesting mowing pattern around a perfectly circular green.

I'd say Funny and Fun...

Would love to play it, and it sure would be difficult to NOT do more with that location.

As we know...more is not always better.

Bryan, how long is the hole, and what club(s) might you normally hit into it?

From the tee it looks a bit like a milder version of the famous cliff hole at Biarritz.  From overhead it looks a bit like the mysterious crop circles that pop up in some of the most unexpected places.

I know it would be one thing! It would be funny for my playing partners when I ripped a driver into the hut on the left .

The hole is 120 - 150 yards, probably playing 15 to 20 yards more up the hill.  No driver required for most.

From above the green, if it's as domed as it looks, reminds me of Captain America's shield.

This is a 10 hole course with 10 greens and 18 tees.  There are cops guarding the front of one green; practically no bunkers, a short par 4 hole where the second shot is directly over an old stone wall (somewhat akin to North Berwick).

The course looks like fun.  Has nobody in the UK played it?  Sean?  Dai?

The hole is at Dunnerholme GC in South Cumbria - see website - https://atantalus.com/dunnerholme/
Not played it myself but from the video within the clubs website it appears to be the kind of quirky, rural and rustic course GCA some fans might appreciate.

It would be great fun to play.  It reminds a bit of the second shot at number 7 at Old Mac.  Number 13 at Balcomie is a longer, tougher version that could use an aiming pole.

Oops, misread this one. I thought that was an aiming pole in the distance. Castlerock in Northern Ireland has a tee shot that looks
like that and is a pretty tough par four.
