Huntington Country Club - Huntington, NY

Any info on this course out there?  I understand it’s an Emmet that has undergone some restoration and tree removal.  Playing in the MGA Four Ball there on Monday.  Thanks!!

Years ago I posted a photo tour.  It has been faithfully restored gradually over a number of years.  Huntington is a wonderful course with some truly great holes.  You will probably leave wondering why there is a lack of accolades for its greatness.

Wow, time moves quickly.  It was over 7 years ago I had the pleasure of playing Huntington:

This is reasonably up to date.

I'm the consulting architect.

Most of the trees are now gone and the grassing lines are done.

Work at the 17th (not original) is in the next year or two
Rebuilding alternate 4th green (the one you'll play to) is after that.
The original green is on the left, I put it back in play, but they don't like "that hole".

Awesome, thanks guys.  Seems like a very underrated place.  Looking forward to how it plays tomorrow, hopefully the rain isn’t too bad.

a real gem of a course-like so many in the MET area passed over by the list tickers.
was the left green on 4 used as a practice area? (in overhead photo)
and did you say that left green is in play now?

Mike,

Huntington has some deceptive bunkering ,sporty greens and sharp changes in elevation. A good caddy will be invaluable to guide you over false fronts and nuanced greens. Before you tee off ask him where to place your drive in order to set up the best approach because sometimes 230 yards is better than 280 yards at Huntington. Also sidehill or hanging lies occur that complicate distance control and approach shots. Huntington has superb par fours, many of them are under 370 yards.

I have experienced 26 Emmet golf courses and I believe the stretch from ten to sixteen  (designed with his partner Alfred Tull)  is certainly one of Emmet's most memorable stretch of consecutive holes. Finally Don't go long on 6,11, or 14!  Ian Andrew has done excellent restoration work. Now Golden Age features are alive and well at Huntington.

Left green is used as the practice area now.
It is the original green (falls away from play).
I put it back in play and asked them to play it again.
They did. They prefer the right green site.

Interesting we played our LI PGA Championship there several years ago.
i didn't even notice the left green(and I lasted 5 rounds :o ).
Perhaps they like having the practice fairway and green and a bit of room between 4 green and 5 tee-can't blame 'em for that...but I'd sure like to play the fallaway green at least once

Precisely the type of golden age course that was greatly underappreciated prior to the recent architecture renaissance.

Hoping they are not seeking to needlessly lengthen the course, another one of the locals that plays a modest length from the "tips" and thus is a great "member" course from that length.  More charming to have the varied distances on par 4, and par 3 which most clubs loose when they lengthen.

Course is in great hands with Ian, and hopefully they will accept the return of #4 as the drastic dogleg always felt a little off.  Favorite is the all world green somewhat offset road hole green complex at #7 which is sadly buried in shade in the aerial.

Not a chance ... they know who they are.
It's a fantastic membership and staff.

lots of gems in that (edited) quote there Corey.
That green on #7 is confounding and thought provoking-especially in competition.
Not all that difficult to replicate elsewhere....,,yet seldom done--pity

This is one of the 2 or 3 restorations I've seen that is almost completely true to its origins. If you change the color to b/w the aerial could be substituted for one in 1938. The membership certainly understood the gem that they had. Great work, Ian.
