I suspect that many CONGU handicaps will go down considerably, because now it is best 8 of last 20. Previously those 12 other rounds were also factored into the handicap, now they are just ignored.

There's a different philosophy in the WHS: they want your handicap index to reflect your potential, not your actual performances.
I doubt that very much Ulrich.  Under CONGU, for higher handicappers (the least consistent), those 12 rounds would only give you 0.1 back.  The two or three of your 8 which were better than handicap could take a full shot off and the 5 or 6 which were around handicap would be neutral.  CONGU very much represented the best you were for higher handicappers.  I understand that when they have run the conversion here to see what change it will make, the vast majority see no or very little change.  Obviously what we have never had is the vanity handicap caused by players regarding heroically optimistic rounds from social games where the ball never saw the bottom of the cup and there was no pressure on the player.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I can't argue with your points, you are probably right. What I've seen when comparing USGA and EGA systems in the past (which are somewhat similar to WHS and CONGU) is that the USGA handicap index was quicker to fall and also quicker to rise. So if your EGA has been lingering around, say, 15, then the equivalent USGA calculation would quickly go down to 12 with a couple of good rounds and just as quickly bring you back to 20. But overall and on average, the USGA handicap was always lower than the equivalent EGA handicap (putting in the same performance data).

The USGA system had that bonus for excellence, which was scrapped in the WHS, but probably over-compensated for by counting the best 8 instead of best 10 rounds. Vanity handicappers will not be affected, as they don't post any scores, once they've reached their target number.

No doubt that the old US system and now the WHS will move more quickly than CONGU.  One of the real problems with CONGU was how slowly handicaps would go up.  As to US indexes being lower than equivalent CONGU handicaps that, I think is Mike's point.  A US golfer's course handicap would, on most courses, be higher than their index and therefore nearer the CONGU handicap.  Comparing indexes to CONGU handicaps was always a mistake.

Mike, we understood the difference completely but it was always entertaining to have you explain it again in the pub the night before the matches started.  BUDA will never be the same without the annual handicap debate.

So, we have some very understandable withdrawals.  How many are still in? I (and at least two of three offspring) still are.  As is Conrad.

We might be 10-12. Can we recruit any more UK'ers?

Sean, it seems the decision has been made for me. The Netherlands have been removed from the list of safe travel corridors yesterday, so I'd have to self-isolate for 14 days upon arriving in the UK. That cannot be done, so I have to pull out. This stinks. I hope I can join next time!

Sorry to hear this.  Email me your bank details and I will refund the deposit.

As ever i'm up for more golf! Happy to organise with the clubs.

Doc and Boony are you still up for Church Stretton on the Thursday PM?

Also considering staying over Sunday night and adding Landrindod Wells Sunday PM.

Returning eastwards is there a better choice to break the journey than Broadway (which I've yet to see) on Monday?

Tony,

Finlay, Gregor and I might be interested in Church Stretton on the Thursday afternoon, too.

Sean,

We're still looking at Cam's travel options but his attendance is looking less likely.  Hold on to the cash for the moment.

I'm in. The alternative tour got cancelled. I'll need to check what I signed up for previously but I think I'd be up for stretching the trip out a bit.

Jayne and I will wend our way down to Welshpool for the afternoon round on the Friday. On Saturday I'll play 36 at Kington while Jayne will have a lie in and join us in the afternoon. We'll both play Sunday morning - although Jayne reserves the right to change her mind about that!  ;)

If anyone travelling from the north fancies breaking the journey in the Manchester area we'd be delighted to host you at Cavendish and/or Stockport on the Thursday. Welshpool is only an hour and 40 minutes from us.

Looking forward to it!

Yes from me. I'll be at Church Stretton.

Yep, I'm still up for Church Stretton beforehand.

Just spoke to Sean to confirm I'm still up for all day at Welshpool and the morning of the first day at Kington but I may be able to stretch that. I'll confirm shortly.

Cheers,

James

ps Robin, looking at your signature, this may be the first time we ever meet up when you will have had more golf under your belt than me!  :o

John, thanks for posting - I was compelled to re-read the entire review.  When reading Sean's excellent profiles I can't help but wonder:  When and why  did golf architecture go awry in so many ways?

Like you, I am so disappointed regarding Buda.  I think I'll console myself with a two weeks trip next year to Wales and the Cotswolds.

Be well,

It's good to receive any accolades, but these two courses are excellent full stop. There is no need for a 6000 yard descriptor.

I don't have a clue about sub 6000 world. I am usually dubious of any world list to do with most things.

In GB&I I think Kington and Welshpool are very high up the sub 6000 yard list.
