But in seriousness, you point out something interesting, and another piece of why I think the gunch enhances 7 rather than detracting. It just isn't that hard to avoid if one plays that hole wisely, and yet, it's VERY in play if one doesn't. I assume your 7 iron yardage is 170+. And that's pretty damn close to 200 yards. But that 20-30 yard gap is all you need to give yourself a 50 yard wide target as opposed to a 10 yard wide target. The math is simple, but taking advantage of it requires discipline. The hole is very gettable. Even without hitting a good drive on it in my life, I've had three realistic chances to reach in two. But it's never been the wise choice. It takes serious patience to play a 480 yard hole as a three-shotter, especially when the other 17 holes make it feel like it might be your only birdie chance.
