Hopson Hills GC - New 9 Holer - Near Utica, NY
« on: August 29, 2016, 07:02:33 PM »

It’s been a while since I last posted but I guess I was waiting for something really worthwhile to share.  I’d like to introduce my fellow GCA’ers to the Hopson Hills Golf Course, a wonderfully walkable 9 hole links in Central NY (with plans to expand to 18).  The course is located in Dolgeville, 15 minutes from Little Falls (the Erie canal passes through here) and 30 minutes from Utica.  It’s completely worth a day trip, only $17 to walk eighteen holes, you won’t see many courses like it in the US.

The routing is exceptional considering how little earth moving was required to connect the golf holes.  All the greens were built “California” style with T1 bent grass and only 2 fairways were “shaped” at all (to get through a particularly severe corner of the property).  There are many aspects of this project, which remind me of the work on we did on Tom Doak’s course at Dismal River.  At Hopson however, the presentation is even more Spartan.  Fairways are fescue, grown-in and maintained without irrigation.  The golden, browned out turf is also reminiscent of a sheep track you might find off the beaten path in Scotland.  This place exemplifies the soul of the game and just how simple and fun golf can be on a good piece of ground.

The course features big greens, for a country course (avg 6500 sq/ft), with a variety of subtle micro contours, false fronts and fall aways.  It took me a few rounds to appreciate the subtlety in the greens and the overall design.  At the end of the day, I always walk off the course surprised and impressed by the effort and dedication of the owner and first time architect, Bill Fox, to building a golf course the old fashioned way.  There are no templates here but CB and Seth would be proud…

I’m currently working on the project and helping the owner with anything and everything to keep it going.  The project continues to move along, but the previous two years had only 6 holes open, so this summer is a milestone for the golf course.

I’m hoping enough GCA’ers can come out and start a discussion about the merits and faults of the design and perhaps add to the evolution of the golf course.  If you don’t already have plans this week, pick a day to come by to check out a beautiful golf course and support a unique project in the world of golf.  I’ll be happy to show you around and dream up some of the great golf holes that are yet to be born.

Hopefully I can get there in the next few weeks - I'm a few hours down the road.

Two questions -

3486 is pretty long - why so much length?
why only one par 3?

Mark,

If you don't mind slumming it, I can pick you up at the bus stop in Utica!  I'll be up around here until Sept 9-10.  Let me know if you can make it.

Cheers

John,
John,

Hopson is using a modified routing at the moment, follow the below diagram (green numbers are modified routing)...the true front nine is a little more balanced from a yardage point of view, but the course is still pretty long and sits on 190 acres of open land.  Holes 7-9 are as follows:

Par 3 - 150y
Par 4 - 330y
Par 3 - 180y

Also worth noting, Hopson has a set of tees well down the fairways 100y or more for anyone who wants to play a shorter course. Notably Mike Keiser has done this at Old Macdonald and I'm assuming some other developments...Arthur Little has also been a big proponent of creating tees between 4000-5000y and has put together some literature with the PGA called "Setting up the Golf Course for Success".

If anyone is interested I can pass it along.  There are several sets of tee markers at Hopson Hills, just not listed on the card at the moment.

Jeff,

Thanks for sharing this wonderful course you are involved with.  This looks like right up my alley.  It's 7.5hrs from me and I've been or passed through the area before. Please keep us updated with posts.

Jeff,

A nice story on your project in New York.  Last spring I got to enjoy the School House 9 with Mike and now reading what your doing with this 9 hole loop with possibilities of 18 are really the stories I am interested in.  I will continue to follow what you will be trying to do to revitalize this layout.  I found the Schoolhouse 9 to have that same refreshing outlook on the game, nothing fancy just golf for the good of golf.  Watching you and Mike talk about your involvement gives the sense of pride and ownership with every detail of the golf course.  I did not get to meet Jason on site at The Canal Shores project but I am sure he has the same passion for the work.  A rake, shovel or just laying sod.  I think that is  a small part of the emotion that Jaeger talks about in his posts.

You have to live the architecture to understand the emotion!

Finally got a chance to stop in yesterday and see this. First of all, the best part is that it appears to have a healthy local following. School kids were practicing and the lot had a bunch of cars for some after work golf.

They did a very good job w/ the greens - push w/ lots of fall offs. The routing is great and very very walk-able. Liked the 4-6 loop very much. The native area's are well out of play but they really do a great job of defining the boundaries. Given that they only thing I would ask is a bit more of fairway definition. Just get up and hit driver hard with no care was a bit repetitive.

If you are ever in the area, I'd recommend a swing by and see the place.
