World’s Biggest Volcano
« on: August 22, 2019, 08:39:44 PM »
Played Bedford Springs in PA for the first time this week.  I would venture that the 4th hole is the biggest Volcano hole anywhere.   I enjoyed this hole, but I have no idea how my 75 year old Dad would play this hole, even from the front tees at 120 yards.  And you had to really be a masochist to envision playing this with hickory in 1923.

223 yard shot about 40 feet uphill.

30 yards short of the green.

I played it 45 years ago. The picture does not do it justice. I still remember hitting up what seemed to be a mountain.

I'll bit and play advocate of the devil. Is that a volcano? It doesn't drop off anywhere but in front. A volcano should be conical, more or less, a la the one near my home town, at CCBuffalo.

It may not be the biggest volcano but it sure is a good one. Number 11 at Musgrove Mill is a beaut. The second shot is with a short iron to a smallish sloped sideways figure eight green with two distinct sections.

I have seen quite a few Volcano holes on Ross courses.  Did he lead the effort to popularize them?  Or coin the term?

The 4th at Welshpool, from the green of which you can see a large area of mid-Wales.

#14 at Cedar Rapids is a pretty stout volcano green on a par 4.

absolutely awesome picture

amazing all the repetitive shite that gets built, and the oft repeated vapid versions of this hole played backwards.

Man, this is a scary hole...not because of the as approach, but because of the drive.

This photo offers an idea of the scale. I have never seen a hole quite like it. I am just as impressed that Braid opted for a par 4 off the volcano rather than the often used and very tired concept drop shot 3.
