During the TC we get an overload on East Lake and the Golf Channel even had a gushing show about the club yesterday.

I once had the pleasure of playing Peachtree and I was told that Bobby Jones had some issues with East Lake so he got some wealthy gentleman from Atlanta together and they built Peachtree.

There is a legend that East Lake was getting too crowded and that pace of play was becoming too slow for Bobby and his pals.  Is that true or is that just an urban legend?

Was Peachtree created to be more of a true golfers' club rather than a Country Club?  Or is there more to it?

East Lake itself is a golf club, not a country club -- at least in its current state. I don't know if it's always been that way, but they have no amenities beyond the golf course itself (no tennis courts, no swimming pool) and they don't even serve dinner.

But East Lake isn't that great (again, in its current state... no idea what it was like before Rees Jones). I enjoyed playing there, but I've played a lot of courses I think are better even in my limited experience (mainly the southeastern US).

The article puts to bed the notion that 5-6 hour rounds are a recent phenomenon!

Good to know there's always been griping about slow play and stacked tee sheets!
Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.

Clearly that article is wrong.

4+ hour rounds of golf only started to happen in 2003.

Constantly blamed by 8-handicaps for their 7 missed 12-footers each round.

And imagine how long they’d be if today’s average golfers were using what those poor bastards had to play with back in the 30s...
