Wonderful tour, very enjoyable. How playable was the course ? It might have been the angle of someof the photos but some of the carries looked intimidating and there also looked to be some gunch up against a few of the greens. Other than that it looks superb.

What course(s) would you readily compare it to in terms of similarities/quality ?

Niall

Well spotted, Mr C!
Course was extremely playable. Quite short - even from the back tees (not that we played them!)
There are a ton of HARD diagonal carries, but tempered by the fact that failing to make them won’t utterly kill you. #17 might be one of the finest holes I’ve ever played, with a MAD carry into a narrow gully which runs to the green. A corker! I haven’t got a photo of it but I’ll post the strokesaver plan.
Funny it should be you to ask the ‘compare’ question as I couldn’t help but think of Silloth all the way around! There’s also a lot of the feeling of Mach Dunes there too!
Cheers,
M.

Absolutely magic!

That diagonal spine asks the simple question: “Do you feel lucky, punk?” I tried to beast it over the right and ended up with a shot - but a HARD blind one. The girls went left off their tee and had a long but straightforward run-in to the green. All that mounding creates a tunnel-like feeling to the sanctuary at the end. It’s a beauty.

Nice to read such a full accounting of the new layout. Some friends and I were there in the '90s with the old track and the original hotel. The hotel had no rooms, so we stayed in the back in caravans, lined up and a stone's throw from the first hole. The floors were topologically very interesting, and the sinks all had signs in caps stating "NON-POTABLE WATER." We were provied as many liter bottle as we needed. The food was good and the course was mostly ours. It was clear where the landowner adjacent had pulled his property from the course, resulting in an unusual 90 degree dogleg and a river. But there were many places where you could walk out to the course and play 2, or 3, or 6 holes as you liked. The place was clearly running very lean, as a real effort is needed to get there! One of the funniest experiences I have had buying local golf grot occurred in the shop. There was no pro, and a wind-blown matronly Scottish Mrs. was tending the merchandise. When I went to look at a sweater, in the plastic bag, she snatched it back as I was taking it out to try on! A very memorable place with interesting greens and a very old feel. I look forward to seeing it again in its new form.
So much golf to play, so little time....

Thanks Marty. Unusual to see a links with as many bunkerless holes. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

It couldn't possibly be compared to Silloth. There's no course as good as Silloth  ;D

Thanks for posting Marty.  This was one of my favourite courses before the changes were made.  Adam's article is a great read & instructive as to why some changes were made.

I really should go and see the new course in the flesh but I just can't bring myself to prioritise this trip over Uist.

FBD, thanks brings back some fun memories. Played Machrie two years ago and there were only five bunkers with three of them on one hole. It looks like they've added a couple.

When we visited, the hotel was still under construction and it was very primitive. We arrived on the ferry and walked to the small hotel. They rang us a taxi to take us to and back from the golf course.

Laphroaig is a bit of a walk from the ferry but there's a nice path. I'm not a whisky drinker however I bought a nice bottle and unfortunately it still hasn't been opened. I know it's not going bad. If you haven't toured a whisky distillery before it's well worth the time. I also bought a small piece of ground and I hope they've dug it up and made some whisky with it!

On the trip, we played Machrie, Machrihanish, Mach Dunes, and Dunaverty. I wish we went to Shiskine. I would definitely do the trip again and I'm told you can take a speed boat to Portrush and access Northern Ireland.

Mark,

I spent 4 nights in the old hotel in January 91 which was an experience. Having said that the rooms were clean but the whole building was constantly creaking giving the impression of its impending collapse. I had 5 days of almost perfect weather with blue skies and a 1 to 3 club wind. I saw only 2 other players all week both locals.

The Machrie invests in significant course improvements
By Ryan Crombie — 28 April, 2021

The Machrie has further invested in its famous championship golf course by making significant changes to the bunkering and teeing areas.

The Machrie Links greens team has completed the addition of 34 new eco bunkers, been introduced to create a more strategic course, and nine new championship tees to the links, under the guidance of course architect, DJ Russell.

The bunkers are classic links revetted bunkers, constructed by specialist company EcoBunker. EcoBunker use artificial turf from old sport pitches, recycled to use in bunker faces, saving them from landfill.

Moreover, artificial turf has a longer lifespan and requires less day-to-day maintenance. After construction, the new bunkers are almost identical to traditional turf bunkers.

The new championship tees have increased the length of the course from 6,782 to 7,024 yards and have been added to ten of the holes at the championship venue.

For those wanting to perfect their swing, The Machrie Links’ resident PGA Golf Professional, David Foley, is available to provide tuition for all levels from complete beginners to those playing at a more advanced level.

Additionally, there is a six-hole Par 3 Wee Course as well as an all-weather driving range and indoor golf studio for those wanting to nail down the details of their game before heading out onto the golf course.

Set to reopen on May 17, the Machrie Hotel is offering a Summer Golf Breaks package which includes a two-night stay with breakfast each morning, three rounds of golf on the Championship Course and use of the Wee Course, Hebrides Putting Area and driving range.

Running adjacent to seven miles of beautiful coastline with dramatic dunes, the Machrie’s course is situated in a spectacular location and is a must visit for those wishing to experience one of Scotland’s finest championships links.

Timely post, Brian.
We're going back over in three weeks, so I'll do an update with some photos then.

Outstanding Tour.
I played the former version in 2009-a fantastic quirky course lacking only a gang mower width cut on each side to the marram grass from being great.
Looks like they went a different(and certainly more costly) direction.....

That said, it looks good/excellent in its own right-good to see someone invest heavily in such a remote, enchanting site.
The romantic in me would've loved to have seen simple, less costly upgrades to the course as it had incredible quirky old school bones, and used the $$ in the Hotel(as it appears they did also)

I wondering exactly how many people see that there are 9 new back tees and 34 new eco bunkers and decide that now is the time to visit!
