Toughest bunker
« on: July 30, 2019, 05:32:35 PM »
In light of the dumbest bunker how about the toughest bunker. The one that sticks out in my mind because I was in it, is the front left bunker at Streamsong Blue 5th hole. So deep that it was unrakeable. Footprints all the way down the steep sand bank. Had to be close to 10 feet down. I almost couldn’t get out of it. If there is a front pin play to the right of it.

The next one that I am in.

I remember the bunker over the back at Number 10 at Pinehurst 2 pre-restoration as being particularly tough. Easy to get the ball out.  Impossible to keep it on the green.

The left-hand front bunker at Garden City GC #18 is like trying to hit out of a four-foot deep phone booth.

There's a cave bunker down at Barton Creek somewhere that would be really hard to get out of.  4 at Royal St. George's comes to mind as well.

The up and down I was most proud of in about 5 years was from the huge left green side bunker at Pacific Dunes #6.  That bunker fits every definition of a tough bunker:

It is scary to look at.

It is deep.

It presents a shot that temps you to try for too much.

I took a driver swing with an LW to get it out and then made a curving 10 footer.

I’d vote for the monster bunker left of the green at Sand Hills #4.
So bad it's good!

The hardest bunker shots  (inside 60 yards) in Australia to get on the green are from the pit bunkers at Royal Melbourne's 10th West and Barnbougle's 4th. Blind.Deep. Soft sand.Awful distance.

Personally, I would have much more chance of getting on the green from either of those than the left bunker on 7 at barnbougle.

No particular example but something MC mentions above - soft sand - not just lie or the strike itself but even with a good downward foot wiggle there's still a likely chance of a foot slippage  (and thus effect on the shot) when a longer swing is required.
And for those who are physically weak or infirm or notably short of stature bunkers generally ain't easy.

Never played from a bunker I didn't rake. The footprints I was referring too weren't mine. It is possible it was being played as a waste area but I don't think so.

Got a picture of my son hitting a recovery shot from that bunker, thought about naming it, although it wasn't that big a problem for him.  Don't recall his score on that hole, but ended with a par 71, with no birds and one eagle (17) so it may have been one of his two bogeys.

Turns out the front bunker on Pasatiempo 18 is my kryptonite  ;D   It was so steep and the sand so soft....

P.S.  Nice snark Peter...

No one has mentioned the devil's a--hole? The first time I played PV we began on ten and I hit the front of the green and it backed into the bunker. Two shots later I was out for a quick double.
I'll also nominated Himalaya at Royal St. George. My partner actually tried to hit four wood out of it. Didn't work out so well. Hi ball hit the sleepers and almost took his head off.

The 6th hole at Lahinch has a bunker at the bottom of a hollow.  There can't be many more difficult..

- Devils A**hole
- Road Hole Bunker @ National

But I actually think the toughest might be the coffin bunker at Troon. It is so narrow and deep that unless you direct in the middle, you really have no hope of getting it out.

The 2 bunkers fronting the 2nd green at Dornoch are pretty tough, especially given how narrow the green is.

The most difficult bunker I have seen is on the 4th at Sandwich. Guys couldn't even get a stance let alone try to hit the ball. I wonder if the new bunker allows balls to roll to the bottom of pit?

Sean in 100 or so caddying rounds and probably a similar number playing there over the years I’ve never seen anyone in the Himalayas bunker on the 4th at RSG!
