Cabot - Any Updates
« on: May 11, 2018, 02:48:30 PM »
Anyone have any new updates on a short course going in at Cabot or a third 18 holes further south in the town?

From what I understand they are waiting on the government to make a decision. The land for the 3rd course sits on Federal property.

I'm told that Mike and Ben have selected an architect not named Bill Coore.

I have no updates on the resort, but any satellite map fiends here (like me) should be aware that Google finally has high-resolution images of both Links and Cliffs! https://goo.gl/maps/78r5tu4iLVy

Cabot Cliffs No. 2

I have been out at Cabot doing some work on the Cliffs. They seem to be progressing on the project well but it's not my place to say much more other than the project has been talked about to the staff of the resort. On a side note, if anyone is heading out to Cabot I will be out here till at least mid-June. There is a lot going on out here and I can't wait till Cabot announces more of the cool stuff they have planned.

Looks like it'd be north east of the cliffs....perhaps across the road.

There are rumours and news stories about a third course being developed by the beach in Mabou, part of which is in a provincial park.  Here is one (of several) stories:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/cape-breton-west-mabou-beach-provincial-park-golf-cabot-1.4467463

Mabou is about 20 minutes south of Cabot Links.

There is also a 12-14 hole par 3 course in development at Cabot Cliffs in the very near future, if it hasn't already started:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/alkenbrack-golf-cabot-cliffs-links-par-3-1.4425142

It is great to see that Google Maps has been updated to show the course,  but a two dimensional image does not do that hole justice.  IMHO the 2nd at Cabot Cliffs is one of the most interesting and unique holes in golf and you can't capture that in an overhead shot.

Wayne,

Yes I agree, it doesn't do justice. Like any kind of remote sensing, there are limitations.

But I get a lot out of comparing how I play courses in the moment against the satellite imagery after the fact. This hole was no exception. Having played Cabot three times now (and making a big number on this hole each time) it was nice to be able to make some comparisons between what I saw and a more objective measure. Some shots and angles get scarier. Some get tamer.

Of course E.B. White famously said "explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understanding it better but the frog dies in the process."

I'd be curious to hear from people if they think this applies to a golf course. Do people seek out or avoid these kind of data when they consider a course?

Cheers,
Christian

If the course has a Strokesaver then you often get something very similar to the Google Maps view.  Here is what they provide for Cabot Cliffs #2 (from the web site):

Heard that the Par 3 course will have holes ranging from 8o to 200 yds
Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

I spent a few days at Cabot last month and seems like a lot is happening. The par three course was almost completely rough graded. I saw Keith Cutten on the dozer working with Rod Whitman. The new pro shop and half way house structures are complete and are the first of a series of cluster salt box shingle style maritime buildings. The main clubhouse location is stakes but not yet excavated.  A new spa building will follow and two new tennis courts are complete. There is a lot of new clearing adjacent to # 1 and # 8 fairways that will be the first of many more roads for residential real estate development that will surround the perimeter.
