Woodcrest CC, Cherry Hill NJ flip the nines back!
« on: July 31, 2019, 12:30:00 PM »
 ;D 8) :P

Woodcrest CC in Cherry Hill, NJ. Opened in 1929 as a nine hole golf course, the original owners quickly added a second nine. One of my favorite architects, William Flynn did the honors and it is a beguiling beauty. A bunch of my friends and I started caddying there as youngsters, and to this day it is one of my favorites.

However, I've got a problem with Woodcrest in its current configuration as somewhere in time the powers that be flipped the nines. I so enjoyed the old routing starting with what is now #10 was the opener.  This change was so the "signature hole"  was the finisher. Some golf committee spent a ton of money on the new clubhouse and the beautiful veranda they built overlooked #9. So flip the nines.
Ouch! :o

This silly change  ruined the flow completely IMHO as now you had a brutish trunk slammer as the 18th, a difficult par five for all but the expert, and made the opening tee shot on the new #1 horribly difficult also. Classic example of not getting it! Anyone who knows the course please chime in . I'm ready for more discussion of this one.

The first hole is a gentl... er...a slap in the face.

10 is pretty brutal too, though...no?

Archie, what was the configuration of the course for your famous caddy story?  That should be the benchmark for the DECISION!

Which story I've told so many I forget.  The best Woodcrest one would shut down the site. From age 11 to 18, when I left for PV the first hole was what is now #10.

Mike C.  The old number one (now ten) was wide open back in the day. Just need to thin out all the pine trees that have grown over the last 40-50 years. Woodcrest is tight, but the old front nine gave you a side to miss it on. By the time you got to ten, you were warmed up and ready to fit a couple really tight tee shots. I'm not a fan of the first shot of the day being the tightest, with a hazard on both sides, just silly to me.

Also given the back nine is now the harder one with a nasty five par with OB and a fronting hazard as the finisher it makes for lots of trunk slamming. Oops no extra beverages and camaraderie today lol. Much better to see your players shoot 47/42 =89 than the opposite.

I love Woodcrest for many reasons, but really would love to see them flip those nines around!
