I hope I'm not misquoting Tom D but I think this was discussed when he showed a group of us round RC whilst in construction.  He thought that he could build the world's best golf course in that land.  But HCEG's position was that, since they already had the world's best golf course, why would they want another, and the inevitable traffic it would attract.  A perfectly sensible position.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I probably did say all of that.  Really, I don't know that it is any better of a piece of land than Pacific Dunes or Barnbougle or Tara Iti, but it's a great one.

As to the latter half, I was just speculating as to the HCEG's position.  I've had the same discussion about Sand Hills - there are plenty more great holes to build out there, but what does it accomplish?  If you do a great job, it just undermines the uniqueness of the first course, and if you don't do something just as good, what's the point?

Rumors around Gullane last week, though, were that the club has done a full study of the possibility, which no one apart from a small committee has been allowed to see.  Sadly, they did not have me do a routing for it.

Which begs the question: have you done a routing on that land for your own edification?

I think you're right. My wife says I see golf courses everywhere.

The truth is, any links golf lover who spends time walking around on linksland will quickly see why golf was invented there.

When we've been in Scotland my wife and I have done a fair bit of bike riding and found areas east of Nairn and south of Irvine that only needed to have holes cut to create a place for golf.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

I recall an area just like this a few miles north of Aberdeen 30+ yrs ago.
Apparently someone ultimately and rather controversially got the okay to build a golf course there.
Funny old world.

This may be my favorite new thread. It’s playing out like a festival of forensics. “Where did that course go...”
As I pull up Google, Apple and GeoSat maps...

"It's a tiny little ball that doesn't even move... how hard could it be?"  I will walk and carry 'til I can't... or look (really) stupid.
