bunker sand
« on: July 24, 2019, 05:23:03 PM »
I was in Pinehurst this week. I played at a course that is renovating their bunkers. The interesting thing is that they are using sand from the property.
I suspect they are not alone in doing this, I just hadn't heard of it before or paid enough attention. Where has this been done? I could guess, but that is all it would be, a guess.
I figure that most links courses have natural sand, but where in the states has this been done?
Sand Hills? Bandon? Streamsong?

Some links courses are lucky and can use native sand because it is the right mix.

But many have to import.

Some again should be importing but can’t afford it.

Ally, of those that "should'" but aren't, what is "wrong" with their sand?

Jeff,

Generally too fine and “light” therefore prone to massive erosion.

We built the bunkers at Friars Head this way. Native sand located on property.

If you want to prevent, fried eggs, you will need an angular sand, Most coastal sands are rounded and therefore don´t compact enough to prevent fried eggs. So, the question becomes, will your targeted market and golfing public accept fried eggs in a sand bunker?
