One of the ten is Cobbs Creek, and the first paragraph in the description of CC has special interest for GCAers...

"Three local men - Chris Lange, Mike Cirba and Joe Bausch - have been the driving forces to put Cobbs Creek in position to move forward on a much-needed renovation of this 36-hole facility. Cirba and Bausch formed the Friends of Cobbs Creek a decade ago, pushing to return the Olde course, which hosted the the 1928 USGA Amateur Public Links as well as a 1955 PGA Tour event, to its original Hugh Wilson routing. That group has morphed into the Cobbs Creek Restoration and Community Foundation, which has leased Cobbs Creek from the city for $1. Lange, the nonprofit's president, is hoping to raise up to $20 million, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer. The grand vision includes the restoration of the Olde course, turning the Karakung course into a nine-hole layout, and creating a new learning center/driving range that could be home to a chapter of the First Tee"

There is quite a range of design fees quoted in that article!  Seems like some municipalities are luckier than others in what they get charged.

I would have put Timber Point on this list.  It's a shame that Alison is not more of a known quantity because his work is consistently excellent.

Plenty of munis that could be saved but please don't promote a golf service affiliated with GolfNow.  Golf Now is a poison for public golf.

Pardon my newness, but fumbled with some photo attachments and links, but they can be found.

Timber Point looks and sounds amazing as it's original 18, if it could be restored.  I had read it rivaled Lido, and was one of the best in the nation at the time.  Apparently, 12 of the original 18 holes are still there.

Side note: in NYC, I would tear up Clearview and replace it with a Bayside Golf Links tribute.  McKenzie's "Spirit of St Andrews" pg. 112-116 have some great words on Bayside's construction and success as a public course whose playability, and challenge were a huge success.  Shame it NLE.

The list is subjective.

They missed the mark on George Wright as well as a few courses in Los Angeles.

Willowick could easily be one

What is that?  I’ve never heard that name before.

Joel-I think George Wright is already in the “saved” category.

Tom:

If Greg is talking about the Willowick course in Santa Ana, CA, it is claimed to be the oldest 18 hole public golf course in Orange County.  There are a few threads on here discussing the course giving it a date of either 1921 or 1924 and as a Billy Bell design, and also claiming it was originally a 12 hole course when it opened.

The course was designed and built in 1929, and if it was a Bell (which doesn't make much sense for the scale of the project and with what else Bell had going on at the time), it wasn't publicized as one.  It originally had 9 holes with plans to add 9 more in short order.  Only 3 of the new holes were built when the addition was started, leading to the thought that it opened as a 12 holer.

Careful where you tread with this one.  There are certain SoCal denizens who consider this one sacred ground and aren't able to give up the myths about its creation.

Farther afield and certainly less well-known, one of my very favourites:

Doon Valley-Classic 9, designed by Robbie Robinson and owned-run by the City of Kitchener, Ontario.
Par 35, c 3000 yards. Wonderful 'structure' in place, in a flowing routing and a fine mix of holes, simply/elegantly presented already -- so I just imagine was some TLC and some bunker & tree & maintenance changes could do.

(It's alive and well, so doesn't need 'saving', but there is no course I play that I more want to see 'revitalized'.)

A quick Google search discovered that Willowwick is about to be shut down and replaced by a real estate development.

Bump for Tommy N., if he chooses to engage in the unreliability of these newspaper reports.
