Renovations have become ridiculously expensive these days but usually clubs wait until they perceive there is an actual need to change something.

This project seems to want it both ways - they insist the golf course is being preserved perfectly, at the same time the renovation was somehow necessary.

So much of the "ridiculously expensive" is in trying to perfect that last 5% of detail in my opinion.  The other issue that is affecting so many private clubs today when it comes to renovations is what I call "bedside manner syndrome".  My mother was one of those that appraised her doctors solely on bedside manner.  She had no clue if what she was being told was right or wrong or efficient yet the doctor with good bedside manner always won out.  And all of her friends, and vice versa, would seek out that same doc.  Same phenom goes on with 501c7 club committees.  Their favorite defense of changes is " well, clubXYZ did it this way and so did Club ABC so it must be right.  And it's all based on how much one can spend....

Think about it.  It has cost a lot of clubs a lot of money.  Have you ever seen a doctor ask a patient:  " which one of the medicines would you wish to take or where would you like me to make this incision?"  yet the BMS guys will ask a committee where would you like for me to place the "Ross" bunker or " which trees would you like to remove or save"....
