Golfers are daft ...

Golfers are daft ....

.... we spend money to hit the ball further and then we spend more money lengthening courses
.... we spend money planting trees and then spend money cutting them down
.... we spend money on immaculately grooming ‘hazards’

.... add as you wish ....

Besides the fact that we choose, of our own free will, to play an always frustrating and only intermittently satisfying game in the first place, you mean? One where the signifiers of failure --the bogey and worse -- are all too frequent and ever-present while those of success are all too rare and fleeting? A game that takes four hours to play but that yet provides us with only 4 minutes worth of great shots or par saving putts? One that seems designed, with the long walks between each 'play' and the ball just sitting there and thus giving us nothing to which to react, to negate and sap us of all natural athleticism -- only to, a moment later, demand absolutely that very athleticism?
A game that each time we play costs us more than a decent steak dinner or a drinkable bottle of bourbon, but that leaves us not full but empty and not drunk but deluded, and often despairing.
Besides that, you mean, in asking for examples of golfers being daft?

Peter,

Game, Set, Match. (It is Wimbledon now after all).

Atb,

I am continuously crazed then amazed that after a round whereby I have been demolished, diminished and disconcerted that within half an hour I am as eager as a puppy to get out and have another crack at this impossible game.
Daft indeed.

Cheers Colin

In today's information age,  it's extremely difficult to accept (in a Big World way) when works of art, are disfigured. Undoing the harm done, is not daft.

Last weekend, I hit a shot into a shopping bag on my way to an 8, then I made a 2 on the next hole.....what was the question again?

Golfers are daft because ;  They chant a mantra of more difficulty,

yet plant trees and grow rough, which does the exact opposite.

And,

They watch the pros play browned out conditions, yet want it lush, all the time, for their game.
They are deluded to what constitutes Sport.

My son sent me a cartoon about an alien from another planet talking to a golfer that went something like this:

Golfer: The object of the game is to hit the ball as few times as possible.
Alien: But it gives pleasure to hit it does it not?
Golfer: Yes it does, but you should try not to do it often.
Alien: So if I don't hit it at all, do I win the game??

wish I had a camera with me.  Person driving a cart with no clubs on the back, but sitting forward to compensate for the carry bag looped over the shoulder.

Golf triggers Tourettes-like outbursts declaring a hatred for the game. These episodes are promptly followed by another loop, on the same course, and/or a shop run to buy more gear to do it again... convinced, "This time will be much better."

"It's a tiny little ball that doesn't even move... how hard could it be?"  I will walk and carry 'til I can't... or look (really) stupid.
