The Lido will be alive and well in Thailand
« on: July 01, 2019, 03:38:00 PM »
It appears that Gil Hanse is building a course in Thailand and that it will be a tribute to the Lido.  I just wonder how he was able to convince the course backer that a tribute to the Lido would be great in Thailand.

Not so bad a thing. I'd heard for years that a certain MK wanted to develop Lido somewhere in the USA. Just never got the place and property right. For all of us, it's a win. If it is successful (it's in Hanse' hands, doncha know) then we praise it. If it's not, then we bitch about it, second-guess, and Monday-Morning caddie it to death. I predict a 24-page thread on the course.

Well that's just fantastic....

Now I have got to figure out how to convince my wife that I need to go to Thailand on a "guys trip"...

Yeah, I think that will happen!!

Why not?  They've already copied the back nine at Augusta on dead flat land. At least Lido was dead flat to start with.

Building on top of another golf course, is an "opportunity to design a golf course on a very unique piece of land" ?

Technically, every piece of land is unique, so no one here can be accused of fraud.  But "very unique" is just bad English.

Tom,

You need to read Confessions of a Comma Queen or at least watch some of the You Tube videos.  There also is an excerpt a few years back in the New Yorker (a magazine which I believe you referenced in another thread) by the author who was the long time Copy Editor for the New Yorker.  If you care about grammar (as I do), you will enjoy.

Educated people have not done a good job keeping up with changes in grammar since the internet has become our primary method of communication. It's like me and untucked shirts. I've lost the fight as I still choose to tuck myself.

I believe much of the recent spate of untucking has more to do with the way the shirts are cut than an actual preference. I have a far better chance of remaining tucked if I go XLT instead of XL. There are better odds of me finding a $100 bill on every tee box than staying tucked in the back for an entire round.

I was pleased to see that even picket lines dress country club casual. Being both a union man and a snob I'm torn if either side really wants to be dressing like the other.

It's a pretty clever routing actually.  Hopefully they pull it off well.
