Rock Spring GC tee time
« on: June 20, 2019, 11:17:53 AM »
I have a tee time at Rock Spring in New Jersey if anyone is interested in joining me? Newly public after the city of West Orange absorbed it. Seth Raynor and Charles Banks design. I made the time for three, but thus far it's just me. Send me a message if interested.

I will be on a plane so can't join but there are some fantastic holes at 'the Rock'.  3 is an epic redan over a quarry; the greens at 4 and 17 are restored and all-world.  I love 8, 10 and 11.  The course is probably 1/4 restored so lots of untapped potential.  Enjoy!

I hope they have cut the grass / caught up on the maintenance of the course since my recent play.  Course was not maintained by Montclair after the decided to sell.

I was hoping to venture out there during the past few weeks but waiting to hear a reasonable report on conditions during our monsoon of a spring.

Mike - played Rock Spring yesterday.  Conditions are more than reasonable!  It's still moist in some areas with continued rain, but it's leaps and bounds improved from season opening.  I had a great time, and of the 4 times I've played there, the pins were in areas of the greens that drastically changed strategy.  The first 3 times, I'd say the pins were in the same areas of greens, so was playing very similar shots.  But, on #3, for example, the pin was on the far left bringing the huge redan 100% in play.  Not so much when it's front right, where it's been the first 3 times.  Also, a simple change of the pin location to  the far back left of 15 made for a MUCH more delicate shot vs where it's been on the front right.  (I bailed out short right).

Lots of knobs and movement on the greens, next to pin placement that really made what seemed a simple 2 put way more challenging.  I think it's only going to get better as the season goes on, and ideally, it will dry out a bit and get firm and fast!

Nigel - Tuesdays are good days for me to play there in the afternoon if you ever want to meet up for a 2 or 3pm tee time.

Thanks, Peter Gannon,

Sounds intriguing.  Will book a tee time soon.

Keep me in mind if you are ever looking to fill out a foursome. I live and work in the area and would love to join you guys.

As an interesting aside, many years ago the pro at Rock Spring, Baker Maddera, started  the Banks Cup. A quad match between Rock Spring, Forsgate, Essex County CC and my club, Hackensack. Course would rotate each year. 8 guys at scratch from the back tees. I used to be good enough to make our team... RS is definitely worth the drive!

When Montclair merged with RS, I suggested they include Montclair's Banks nine played twice, (their other 3 nines are Ross) but nobody listened!

If we pick the date a couple weeks in advance, I could also join for a weekday round at Rock Spring.
South Jersey to Brooklyn. @marrrkfedeli

I would be interested in a round there late Aug or more in the fall.   Sunday would also work - and would be preferable.
Just over an hour away in Princeton.
